Steering wheel will not lock in place

Well as you all know our steering wheels have height adjustment. I bought another max, a 92 SE Auto (number 7), and the steering wheel will not lock in place. Does anyone know if this is an eaisly replaceable part, or what could be causing it? I havent taken the cover off yet to look because I have been busy, but I have 2 hours off later tonight.

I hope it does not involve replaing the entire steering column. Any advice or pics would be great. I checked the haynes and found nothing, and as I am at school, I do not have access to the FSM.

Thanks in Advance.

Sounds like your maxima was attempted to be stolen at one point in it's life. There's a locking mechanism in the steering column. I would pull out the FSM and take a look, but I"m on my way out the door to work.
