pinging after 7k in 1st....
pinging after 7k in 1st....
last night i let a buddy drive my car. i said sure put it to 3k rpm and let it out nicely...he knows how to drive standard basicly maybe not great but hes ok. fckin idiot winds out to 6 and 7k rpm in first gear, bouncing a bit instead of putting the clutch in to shift up...just ****ty driving in general. and if anyone else agrees with me that our 1st gear is crappy to begin with, it jerked a ton and was probably a whole ton of stress on my car. i almost punched him out i was choked! but anyways...
now today , the day after, i get pinging/knocking when i let it into 1st gear. if i give it plenty of gas then no pinging, i usualy dont give it very much and its never pinged before unless i give it way too little. so something is deffinately different. i also get a tiny ping when i stomp on the gas and rev in neutral. it goes, single knock sound, then air intake sucking sound.
i replaced my KS in the summer, i have no cel light on, otherwise it runs the same as before. but you all know what knocking sounds like...and its a huge **** off when your car usualy sounds great.
thanks for any suggestions everyone

Pinging and knocking are two very different things, which is it?
We need more info.
First, if you have damaged the bottom end, it usually shows up on this test:
Slowly raise the RPMs to about 3000 and then take your foot off. Any bad bearings are likely to start chattering about the 2500 RPM mark. On the overrun, (when you get off the loud pedal) if you don't hear any knocking then your bottom end is likely to be ok. Bad mains/big ends actually sound quiet under load, it's on the overrun that they show up.
No problems with the above test? Then it's probably something minor rather than major. I imagine the valves were bouncing at 7K or so. It could be anything from a piece of the ceramic insulator of a spark plug broken off, to a sticking valve. But the basic question remains: is it knocking or pinging? Or maybe even a rattle? Can you record the sound and post it here?

150+ k on the engine. it runs great otherwise.
it seems realy slight, not always happening and for the most part i cant recreate the noise. it just comes up i guess. but its one of thoes things that you can hate about your car.
im not sure the right word to use for the noise anymore. if you've ever had an older car overheat on you, its like that sound. if you floor it, you get a whole bunch of pings(knocks?) and when you shut the car off it coughs out these extra ping noises. like a diesel sound. not that this is the case with my max.
also it isn't over heating at all.
thanks for the replies everyone.
ill try that test out tomorow , thanks again everyone

If carbon accummulated in the cylinder, it would cause pinging. The way to check is to drive in top gear at steady speed around 35 MPH, open throttle without downshift, then listen for pinging. The way to be rid of this carbon is to add a bottle of Chevron additive, then drive at high rpm (3K+) for 20 to 30 miles.
i have ngk platinums...^^
i know somebody will say somehting about how i should have coppers. platinums are pretty good. ill check them though...actualy ill just go get coppers and save all your breath
also i tried this test Clive brought up and nothing. no symptoms.
i use 94octane from chevron 95% of the time. i use good gas so that shouldnt be a factor.
my poor vq.
and yes don't let your friends drive your car.
i swear i felt a big clunk in the idle last night, and when i was barely paying attention...AHHh im paranoid now.

If you didn't hear any nasty rattling sounds on the free-running test and overrun, I really don't think you have anything to worry about. Like SVI30 suggested, that's the way to check for pings: drive in high gear at low speed and open the throttle, that loads the engine (called 'lugging' I believe) to the point where if it's going to ping, it will ping! Pinging can indeed be caused by carbon deposits. They get hot and glow, (like a glowplug model aircraft engine), causing premature ignition.
put in some high octane gas, go easy on her for a while and it should improve if it's only a slight pinging. Otherwise you might need a valve adjustment due to the high miles. Although 150k is not bad for a max. Good Luck
