Timing!!! 451/447

Looks like the timing worked!
SAE and STD are about ~7whp lower.
More details to follow...

Very nice. You were at ~17 psi + a 75 shot when you ran 11.40@123, right?

Dunno how's snow in your neck of the woods but when do you plan on hitting the track?

Good solid numbers Mardi! Love the torque, 450lbs at 4.3K rpm.

Any thoughts on the loss of power after 5.5K?

Any pulls at higher boost?

Any chance I could get a copy of the run file?

Congrats!

Basically this was just a data logging visit for info to send to JWT. Boost was off the one bar WG spring. 93oct pump gas. Timing was the same as my street runs 14-18, in talking to the owner of SRT Mo he thinks that for 93oct pump gas the timing is good where it is, I agree becasue I have not seen any detonation yet, but its still cold out. I was adding 25% injector duty cycle to the JWT duty cycle to get the AFR to that level. The JWT out the box AFR on this chip is high 13's at full boost, not good. MAF volts peaked at 4.78v and total injector duty cycle peak was 69%, so pleanty of room left for more boost. My plan is to send this data to JWT to get the AFR tweaked to low 11's. When thats worked out I will crank up the boost until the MAF is maxed out and re dyno and try a few things. From what Ive run before 18-19psi will max the MAF, this should put me close to 500whp on boost alone. Add a 125 shot and 10.99 should be with in reach this season

Why does power fall off? I dunno. Maybe its the cams, or the intake or the heads. More boost will help this. I could add gain on the higher rpms so the boost creeps up. At least I know that shifting at 7500 is not good, should be more like 6500 for shifting.

Really nice numbers Mardi!!

It would be even better if you could get that top end up a bit too. Ever consider swapping out the MEVI for the 00VI (you still have the MEVI right?)

Although an 00VI does flow a bit better up top than an MEVI, I think there is something else going on there and an 00VI won't fix it. If he was holding power then an 00VI might let him make a little more in the last 1k rpm's, but he can't even hold it.

Man, I love where the torque hits!

Yeah the TQ is very nice for sure - perfect for racing with the 5-spd gearing especially if the top end gets bumped up.

And I agree.. I didn't mean to imply the manifold alone would fix all that. It was more of a separate thought although the way I wrote it it probably came across that way. I seem to do that a lot.. my brain just goes and the fingers don't always keep up I guess.

But I was just thinking that power holding problems aside, either way you slice it the 00VI is a relatively cheap improvement over the MEVI especially on a turbo'd car if you remove the PV and do some porting/shaping. I'd guess that at his airflow probably a good 30 whp up top...

I really dont plan to do any more major mods. Most I will do is increase the boost and add juice. A 10.99 or better et is my next goal. I guess that when I ran my 11.4@123 with the old soft timing map and 19psi and a 75 shot my power was perhaps where it is now. If I add 6 psi more boost a 100-125 shot and the drive line can handle it I should be able to shave 5 tenths off my time.

I think the cams are what is causing the curve to look like that. Im obviously well beyond what the heads were designed to flow so the stock cams are shaping the curve back to what a normal NA curve looks like. Maybe? Or maybe I need a bigger exhaust housing than a .84

Fok it I'll just juice to a 10.99

You know Mardi just eyeballing some numbers off the picture there... with the TQ curve as shown, if it's approximately representative of your engine output across all gears then doing some rough calculations your shift points should be:

1-2: ~6700
2-3: ~6700
3-4: ~6350

Great #'s mardi. I am no expert by any means but i think it is the heads that are causing the upper rpm power drop. We have a guy here in baton rouge that has a 3.5/3.0l hybrid. I have been for a ride in his car a few times and it has great low and midrange power, but falls on its face after about 5k rpm. Although he is NA, i think the 3.0L heads choke off top end power when using them in the hybrid setup.

MardiGrasMax,

I'm really impressed!!
Your #'s are starting to make my car look like a has been!

By the way, I'm going to JWT in 2 weeks for a retune. I haven't been there in almost 3 years and I'm due. The last time they dynoed my car we hit 340 hp without n20.
With the 65 shot, we hit 400 whp but the fuel supply ran out. Since then I added a nismo FPR and rewired and hotwired the walbro 255 directly to the battery.
I was going to go with larger injectors, currently I have 370s blueprinted to 395 but, enough is enough. I'll see what happens with the fuel in 2 weeks Last time, JWT didn't have the capability to measure torque. Does anyone know if this has changed??
Like you, I'm not modding anymore. It's my everyday ride and very heavy, about 3800 lbs with the driver and too heavy to make good #'s at the track. How fast can you drive on the street????

Hi Ron, can I borrow your roll cage? I think the injectors are the limiting factor for you. The Walbro GSS342 should support 700bhp even at 63psi of pressure with 13.5v, in my case I'm counting on it. With 395cc injectors you'll need 80psi of fuel pressure to pull out ~450whp/540bhp, its doable.

Chris: lxl_max with the VQ35 with VQ30 heads also has the USIM. So his car falls flat even more. With a DEK or even a MEVI his car would fly top end.

true, but in a case where mardi is running a mevi i would think that would make the heads as the target of the power loss. It has already been proven that the 3.5L heads substantially flow beter than the 3.0L. With the amount of boost he is running i think it just makes the effects more drastic.

I guarantee it's 4th. Think about it, flooring it in 3rd you would get to redline in like 6 seconds.

Don't even know why I noticed it, but looking at your data log it took you 4.4 sec to go from 4k-6.2K rpm's. From my last data log it took me 7.2 sec to do the same. Of course your car is faster than mine, but not 3 sec in one gear faster.

Was this log done on the dyno? That is the only thing I can think of, being a non load dyno you can pull through the gears faster. Mine was done on the highway. Both 4th gear.

More data

JWT pull and adjusted pull. Note that the JWT pull was done in 3rd. I knew it was lean so I didnt want to do a long 4th gear pull. It is interestingto note that the leaner AFR realy made no real difference in power output.

Data from the pull with the JWT chip and no adjustments

You got some ***** to do a pull being that lean.

I have never found AFR to make much of a difference in power. I took tuned from an off the charts rich to 11:1 and saw no power difference at all. Power is all in the timing, AFR is just about safety.

Any chance I can get a couple Runfiles from ya?? Please

I don't know mike, i have seen plenty of people gain power from tunning AFR. Granted that a small adjustment is going to net much, but tunning from a 10:1 to a say 11.5:1 imo would show gains on a dyno.

I have your run files too Mike, but comparing mine to yours (if you could actually compare cars that have almost 150hp differences), you don't have dips like I do with fuel changes. I really need to get back up to SVS sometime soon.

I am not a tuning guru by any means. But from my expierence and talking to those with much more than me, AFR can make some differene in power when going from maybe 13:1 to 13.5:1. But going from 10:1 to 11:1 won't yeild any power.

Hi Matt,
I haven't got back to you because I've spent the last 3 days torching the roll bar out of the car. You didn't tell me what a mess my interior would be! I had 5 major fires and the inside looks like a barbecue pit. Oh well, I shipped the parts in 1 foot sections to be rewelded. Don't worry every one of the 78 pieces is numbered in arabic. Oh, i need your address. I'll ship fedex overnight and it will only be $1256.32 freight.COD! :
