96 Maxima vs. 92 VW Corrado
I go to school with this kid that has a 1992 VW Corrado. He keeps going on saying he'd smoke me. It's starting to get on my nerves. So my question is should I go up against him? I'm gonna feel like an a** if I lose. All I have done is a CAI and a Y-pipe. He has a cat-back, ECU, and intake. They are both 5-speed. I've taken a few people at my school for a ride and they were all impressed. They all tell me it would be a good race. He hasn't gone to the track yet so I don't know what he's running. He wants me to go to the track with him next weekend. Theres another guy at my school with the same car and he told me he ran a 14.8. I think he should have done better than that for the mods he has done. He's got a K&N filter (he thinks the CAI is "too loud"), ECU upgrade, Y-pipe, test pipe, and cat-back. He thinks I should take the Corrado. I think it would be close.
It's certainly possible to get a 4th gen 5-speed into the 14's with just a y-pipe (Hell it's possible stock if you're a real driver), but if there's no money on the line, why not? Take out as much weight as you're willing to. And make sure your Knock sensor is working.
Seems like a pretty even race, just depends on the driver.
I think weight reduction would be a big key for you. Our cars are bigger and heavier, but have more hp. The more you strip out, the better your hp/weight ratio is going to be. Minimum, I would strip out the trunk, but optimally, take the seats out, too.
Another thing is going to be traction and launch. Your car doesn't have VLSD, so you need to really learn how to launch it right. You also didn't say what wheels you have. Bigger wheels = slower times. If you have 18s or 19s, I doubt you could be under 15 seconds with just a y-pipe and CAI.
Like JClaw said, there is no money on the line, just go out and have a good time.

Stock rims and tires. I'm gonna go to the track next week to see what times I get. I found this web site that tells stock 0-60 times and 1/4 mile times.
http://www.albeedigital.com/supercou...0-60times.html
According to them the max 5-speed gets a 15.2 on the 1/4 stock. The Corrado pulls a 15.3 stock.

Maybe spend some time practicing your launches, where you get a good takeoff without tons of wheelspin. That was my biggest problem when I first went to the track. Horrible 60 foot times because of wheelspin/aggressive launching.
I went to a deserted dead-end road practicing take offs (I live in the boonies), then I used my "test-and-tune" runs to perfect the actual track launch. I went from a 2.46 60 foot to a 2.27 60-foot and my time dropped from 15.2 to 14.8. The only mod I added was an UDP in the process.
In other words, good driving can gain you quite a bit in the 1/4 mile.
I assumed it was a VR6 because he said another dude has the same car and has a Ypipe. Of course maybe he just doesn't know there was more than one engine option and thinks they are all the same.

It's an SLC VR6. I almost bought one before I got the Maxima. The guy that was selling the Corrado took me for a ride and it felt pretty quick but then again, cars feel quicker to me when I'm in the passenger seat. I test drove the Max and couldn't say no. I guess after a while you get used to the power and it doesn't feel like the car is as fast and I underestimated the Maxima for a while. I started winning against cars I thought I'd never beat and that woke me up. I still lost a couple but not too many. If I lose I lose. I just don't want to lose against this loud mouth with his Corrado.
i smoked a VW Corrado some kid at my school has one. my maxima runs like ****. i have a bad knock sensor and both o2 senors on the y pipe are bad. at the time i had no cat and no resantor. you should be able to beat him as long he isnt runing a smaller pulley on the supercharger.

Who cares if you lose, so what. Just race him and have some fun. No shame in losing, I'm sure it will be VERY close. He's modded up anyway, so no shame. In the end, you will have a 4 door sedan keeping up. I raced a new hemi magnum wagon earlier today with my brother's 98 M3. I lost by 2 car legnths up to 80 on a 3 lane road, (actually, he stopped pulling around 65...almost seemed like I slowly started to creep back). Down at the next light, I rolled down the window, thumbs up, nice car. Hey, you can't win them all!

Well we finally went at it last week but it wasn't on the track. I'm not gonna go into detail cause I don't know if the org would allow it and I don't wanna get in trouble so let's just say I was happy with the results.
