**HELP** Winding noise when i accelerate

For about a week now, my car has been makeing a winding noise when ever i accelerate. It kinda sounds like i have a supper charger in my car. lol It only makes the noise when i am accelerating. When i let off the gas or put the car in neutral, the noise stops. The winding noise goes through all 5 of my gears but its very faint in 5th gear. Its most noticable when in my lower gears. I am thinking it could be my idle bearing or my engine mounts. What do yall think??

Check your belts and pulleys, it sounds rpm dependent so pop the hood and rev it in neutral and listen for the sound.

bad grounds....esp if you have subs....wires are crossing..most likely the RCA cables. just get a grounding kit and that should solve ure problem

It could be a scored gear in your transmission.

Hey I had a similar problem too. Stil havn't figured it out yet (basically its been too cold sitting outside in the snow to try and find the problem right now lol). I was told to take a look and wait till it got warmer to see if it continued. Anyways... I did post a thread before so check here for some more info: http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=456912. Hope it helps!

Not stupid. If the whining gets higher pitched as the RPM's go higher, turn off your deck and take off some load on the alternator. It will usually get worse when lights are turned on too. If that's the case, its most likey alternator whine...check your grounds.

I get the same thing in my car whenever my ipod's not plugged into my head unit's auxillary input. There's some weird interference from the cable being unplugged that creates a soft winding noise...

i popped the hood and listened while by brother hit the gas and i couldnt get to noise to happen. It only makes the noise when i am moveing and in gear. I checked to see if my subs or radio were causing the problem so i un pluged the subs and turned the raido off and it still made the noise. It is the same pitch and loundness wheather i have the radio and subs on or off. I dunno what to do know, its makeing me so frustrated. Any one with suggestions???

i had a similar sound on my old 300zx. turns out it was the water pump. it got loose enough to actually break my alternator belt. try to wiggle the pulley... if it moves, theres a chance the bearing is going downhill

Does this happen when you start driving or only after awhile of driving? (ex. After a drive on the highway)

maybe differential or wheel bearing.....the input shaft bearing tends to make more of a clicking noise than a wine...

if he doesnt hear it when its in neutral then why would it be the alt?

same with a wheel bearing, if he pushes in the clutch and it goes away its not the wheel bearing.

so im going back to my its the transmission theory.

No that doesn't mean it's just gonna die.

My car has made this noise for over 2 months. It's been too cold (w/ too much snow) for me to stay under the hood lately. I was told that it may be the cold so if it makes the noise when it gets nice out then check again. I'm just going to the shop for an opinion. They can fix it or I'll do it depending.

But unless you know you alternator could be going, it's not positive that it's just gonna break down.

Im pretty sure its not the transmission because i have been going a week with the noise, and i havent noticed anything thing weird with my car except the noise. If it was the transmission wouldnt it get worse everyday i drive the car? Or wouldnt the niose get louder?

It happens when ever i drive my car weather its cold or hot outside. The climate has nothing to do with the problem. The only time the noise stops is when i stop accelerating. The more i push on the gas the louder it gets.

It's your tranny bearings. I had the same problem with my 5spd and had the bearing kit replaced and that stopped the noise. They were pitted and worn to hell.

most likely alternator (if u meant whining noise)...if u got a system in your car you'll either want to get a bigger alternator or a big capacitor. Any car repair shop should be able to test your alternator to see if its good or dieing

Bearings can make this kind of noise, but not overnight. It takes months/years to damage bearings to that point.

I agree with taking the car to check the alternator. Autozone or Advanced Auto will test it for free.

I know. What im saying is i have this noise too, and ive been trying to find out what the problem is. So has another person who started another thread a while back. Since we both have this noise, and hes stick while im auto, i dont think its the tranny.

They both have the same differentials, so it's still possible they have gear damage.

But until someone takes the car to a mechanic or starts working to narrow down the possibilities, it's anybody's guess.

I had a bad whining noise for about 2weeks, then the alternator finally went out. Right after i replaced the alternator,, no more noise. You never know but the alternator is a good check.

How would we check the alternator. My previous owner said it was already replaced under that recall. So the new one is making noise too? I wouldnt know, since i its always made that high pitched whistle since i had the car at certain rpms @ load.

I'm telling you man, get it checked out soon. That has been the symptom of a bad alternator on every car that I've had. Trust me, and when you start hearing that noise, you TYPICALLY have only a few weeks until it goes. And once it goes, your car WILL break down.

if its been two months, clearly your alternator is not going. and yes, if his alternator is the problem his car will die on him.

Go get your alternator checked so you can rule that out, specifically speaking to hockeyboy. The fact that it only happens in gear makes me think it's the bearings. If they're pitted and worn and you continue to thrash the car it can blow a hole through your differential. I hope it isn't your tranny because it's not a cheap repair having had it done myself. GL

Hey man...I got the same problem...the sounds really annoying...compare to having the quiet sound of a stock max....
Did you get your alternator checked out btw?...

Come to think of it...when I started to use those iPod players on the car...did only the sound started to occur...im going to go see if autozone can check the problem...

Btw...those of you who replaced the alternator...how much did it cost?...labor and the alt itself.

Well we'll see what happens. All I was saying is that it's probably not the alternator if I've had the exact problem and I havn't died either.

Well weigh this out:
1) Go to Autozone and get the alternator tested for FREE. Time = 10min, cost = 0.

2) Wait until the alternator fails. Time = 2hours on the side of the road, plus time required to get the alternator fixed in a hurry. Cost = one new battery ($80) + towing fee ($100, or AAA).

So you're telling me that you're choosing option 2?

Hey man...I just had autozone check it out...its not the alternator...or battery...the guy said its most likely the belts thats making the whining sound...so I guess have a mechanic check it...and from what I heard...it aint that hard to replace the belt...I just wish I had the tools and space to do the stuff...but yea....check the belts bro
