Dealer wants to give me 11,900 for my 2002 Sterling Mist with Black cloth, 6spd, roof, Bose.........was involved in fender bender last year but was repaired very well.....has only 34K miles, and new Pilot Sports all around.........I was hoping for closer to 13K. What do you guys think?

Do not give it to the dealer. Sell it yourself. cars.com is your friend. Sounds like you have a very nice car with low miles on it. $11k sounds low. Don't do it.

fyi, trade-in value for your car is $12.5k
Private Party Value is $14.8k

Check kelly blue book (kbb.com) and you'll get a better idea.

WOW...tell the dealer to stuff it in his ****. You can get at least 14 out of it private sale. Where are you located at? I know here in MI/OH i looked for about 6 months and finally found an 01 with 49K and a 5 speed for 10,900 and that was a steal for this area. Check autotrader.com for values.

Yea, I have checked kelly blue book..........and you are correct, But I usually dont have much luck selling stuff. With the new tires I was hoping for closer to 13k for my Maxima ( tires were 950.00 for 235 50 17's) Thanks for the feedback. Jake

Blue Book Trade - In

Dude,

Blue Book trade in for your zip code is $11,725 in Excellent condition. THe 11,900 he's offering is a good deal. Your accident could knock it out of the Excellent category technically.

Pricing for used cars varies by area (zip code).

Dont mean to split hairs.........however blue book for my Max in excellent conditon in my zip code is 12,350.........yea I know technically my accident could lower it..........so I guess it is a fair deal.......just those darn new Michelins with less than 1000 miles irks me! My fault........Thanks for the replies guys......

dont give to dealer... always worst case scenario with trade-in regardless of condition of the car. We do case studies of these scenarios in my personal finance class.

I would reccomend just being flat out honest with someone and find someone on the ORG that wants to purchase it. We are your friends!

Dealers in my area (Toledo) would sell this car for $17K, so no 11.9 is NOT a fair price. He can get $13-14 out of it.

I just looked on autotrader.com and the lowest priced 02 with under 45K on it was going for 15.5 in the WHOLE country. The highest went up to 18K, so i think you can get 14 out of it.

Not to be nitpicky, but just because people are asking for certain prices like $17k for a 4 year old Max does not mean they are getting it.

You want 13K. Dealer is offering you basically 12K for it. For one nobody in there right mind goes off of excellent condition. KBB private party good condition is about selling price 95% of the time. "suggested retail" is a STARTING point for negotiations, anyone who pays that is a retard.
You could probably list it @ 14,500 on your own and could probably get $13,700 without much trouble...but you have to factor in time and money selling it.
Calling the paper or listing it on autotrader and paying fees
dealing with people calling you and explaining everything over and over again
letting others test drive it on their schedule
insurance on the car while your trying to sell it (assuming you have another DD at this time)
if it doesn't sell, depreciation while it sits
keeping it clean while its for sale
While many here have manuals and love them the fact is that it's harder to sell a manual than it is an automatic.
In all fairness, I paid 10K for a 2000 GLE w/ a 3.0 (duh) 5 months ago with 58,000 miles so you should get 13,5-13,7 no problems. Just make sure you list it as a 5 speed if you decide to sell it on your own, otherwise you'll get 100 calls with people saying nevermind.
Did they offer 11,9 cash or trade on another vehicle??

Come sell your car in Utah-you'll get more money for it. Different cars are worth more in different parts of the country (kinda like insurance, but not quite as dynamic).

GL w/ the sale. Maybe you could find a local max owner that would want to trade you their more worn tires+cash for your new tire...if you are trading it in.

Yes, the 11,900 was offered on a new 06 Pontiac GTO...........Will most likely call them in a day or two and see if they will meet me halfway at 12,500

I just bought my '02 6-speed with 55k miles on it for $13,000. It's in near mint condition both inside and out. The guy was asking $14,500 for it and he went down to $13. It has everything but leather and auto climate control. It does have the Meridian package though which I think is weird with cloth. It also had the side airbags which seem almost impossible to find. I'm going to put leather in it as I hate the cloth, but other than that I feel like it was a good deal for the car.

If your trading for something this def. isn't enough info for us to say good or bad deal....MSRP is list price and can be negotiated. When you have a trade-in they jack up the trade-in value and won't budge on the sale price.. When you have cash or no trade you are in a better position to negotiate the final sale price.

Example...
Getting a divorce so I had to get ride of and pay off the Denali.
Was looking at a 02 Max. They wanted 16,900 for it. I went in there and asked them if they wanted to buy the Denali. They offered me $3500 cash for it...(This is when gas was nearly $3.00 a gallon, every single lot was full of used suvs, and the Denali had 170,000 miles) On trade they offered me $6500 but wouldn't budge off of the 16,900..
If I had sold my Denali outright for $6500 and had that for a down payment I'm sure they would have gone down to 14 or 15K on the car...

And not to discourage you from buying the 06 but you do realize buying a brand new car is the abslolute worse investment possible and is just plain idiotic unless your loaded..
Unless you have $$$$ to burn you could wait 2 years buy that car for 1/2 price and take the 15K you saved by doing so and put that towards your house payment which will appreciate not depreciate...In 10 years after your property value has risen 10% you not have roughly 17,000 more than you would have if you had bought that 06...That's a chit load of money if you ask me.....my .02

This is true! I would never buy a new car either just because of depreciation. I always by a couple years old, still good with out the massive drop off in the first couple years in value. If you have money though, who cares, you got money!

Pffff Carmax? They are a joke. They don't give you anything for your ride and their prices are NOT negotiable and they are priced at a premium. You get hassle free/good cars though...
