Normal or Abnormal After Y-pipe installation Sound

I just installed my y-pipe and now I get noise from the font middle of my car under the drivers/passangers feet area. Also when I go 75+ I get a psshhhh noise. its not the whistle or intake like before.

My set up is:
Custom Intake, 2 1/2 inch y-pipe, Race pipe (cat) 3'' full custom pipe (no b-pipe or resonator) Stock Muffler.

Is this normal?

I thought y-pipe was gonna make the car louder, Isnt it suppose to be louder in the back (muffler not near front)

Does that mean I have a leak?

What have other people expierenced?

Take it to and exhaust shop and pay for them to look at it?

I just recently had my Cattman y installed on my 4th gen and I noticed it was much throatier, and deeper sounding, but I don't get that sound that you speak of. I'd have it checked, maybe one of the gaskets isnt on good, or theres a leak somewhere...

was your sound from the front 3/4 of the car or the rear? What would you replace the gaskets with?

What about applying gasket maker on each of the ends?

I have a sputtering sound coming from the area you mentioned that I diagnosed as a bad flex section on the y pipe. I can only hear it when the sound is reflected back to me when I'm driving between 3500-4500 rpm.
I would check your exhaust sections connect for exhaust leaks.

on the flex section. I hear this is a common area of failure... Well as far as y-pipe failures go.

It's probably leaking. Check the 3 flange areas where the y-pipe is connected. Start the car and get under it. Stick your hand by the flanges (do not touch; will be hot if the car has been running for awhile). Tell someone to rev the car if necessary. Check where the 2 primary exhaust manifolds connect to the y-pipe. Also check where the y-pipe connects to the car/race pipe. It could also be rubbing against the floorboard or heat shield. But most likely, it is a leak.

its not no banging noise, its more like a air breathing in through a small space, and not the intake, or air breathing out, anyone ever put a fed spec y-pipe on a cali spec car?

It doesn't matter if it is a fed-spec or cali-spec vehicle. That sound is not normal. Another way to tell is there will be carbon deposits around the leak.

Like Whazzzzup already said, it doesn't matter if its FED or CALI spec. Your issue sounds like its the bee-in-a-can sound from the flex section.

Have someone rev the engine while you use a piece of paper or your hand to try to feel for escaping exhaust gases around the flex section. If the leak is big, you may even feel it at idle w/o having to rev.

Btw, what brand y-pipe did you get?

1. a fed-spec ypipe won't fit a cali-spec car, and vice versa.....so that's not it.

2. you have a leak. as whazzup said, put the car on ramps, turn it on, and hold your hand near (do not touch) the various flanges to see if you can feel the exhaust leak

IIRC, the Stillen ones do, because they made all their y-pipes the same (CALI), but included that little bent extension piece for the FED spec people. I think.

I bolted mine on with the stuff you see in my sig. It sounds like a rice rocket, none of that "sssss" sound (except for my TB restrictor removal) I believe you have an exhaust leak somewhere. What i would do is put the car up on jackstands, fire it up, and try to feel for leaks around the flanges.

Actually Maxboost925's method is pretty difficult...alot of pain and trouble to go through just to check for exhaust leaks....

what I would do, is run some seafoam through the car....it will smoke like crazy and u will be able to identify where your exhaust leaks are very easily...

seafoam FTW!!

I found out the leak, one of the ring gaskets are bad.

TOo tell everyone a fed-spec y-pipe will hook up to a cali-spec car. (living prof)

1 more question, the noise i might be hearing is the "bee's in the can noise" what creats that noise how do you get rid of it? by changing the flex?

This is from the WarpSpeed performance website:

Q: Does this pipe have the "bees in a can sound"?

A: No, we have used the new lined flex sections for almost 4 years and we have no reports of any hiss or bees in a can sound.

I recently put a Cattman ypipe on my car, and there is no change in sound at the front.just throatier at the rear. A guy I know just had a Budget y pipe installed, and he has the bees sound at the front. Definately caused by flex section. Not necissarily a leak, just makes that sound.

I doubt any muffler will restore any low/mid end on these cars.

Similar to what irish44j said, but my addition to this is go to a homedepot and get a soapy solution used by plumbers to detect leaks in gas pipes, and follow instructions from there............when applied to the flange, and it boubles; you have a leak...........Hope you don't!

I always run seafoam through the car to check for exhaust leaks....you don't have to put much for it to smoke...I only add a small cup worth and my car already starts to smoke...you can detect leaks easily with seafoam...
