How can I get this O2 sensor out?

My rear O2 sensor is bad, and I tried to get it out, but it is totally frozen in there. I tried chemtool and it won't even budge. The damn thing is getting rounded off. Any ideas? Should I torch it out?

When you heat up the vehicle it will come off easily atlest mine came off very easily. Run the car for 5 minutes and then try, but then be careful there are a # of hot spots out there, could get burnt.

Spray some BP Blaster and tap it gently and give it a shot again.

I didn't have to thro BP Blaster at it when I replaced mine, I just heated up for 5 minutes and all of them came off easily.

Try a small pipe wrench. Get the teeth on a strong part of the sensor so as not to crush it. I pulled a PO158 (Sensor 2, Bank 2), I have replaced the rear sensor , I will order the rest and replace them. I thought there was a group deal on sensors from Auto tech. They dont have the NGK, but the have the walker, denso and bosch, there web addy is: oxygensensors.com

It is PB Blaster and not BP Blaster... My wife's morning sickness has caught onto me.

PB Blaster is what I used on my strut knuckle bolts and it came off, wonderful product. I broke my breaker bar when I tried taking the bolts off without soaking it with blaster.

It seems to work for many folks, just try it and you will be surprised!!!

Like the others said, PB Blaster is GREAT!

Also, buying a socket made for removing O2 sensors will make your life easier.
There are a few different designs but I like the one that looks like a regular socket with a slit up one side.

oh good, a thread about 02 sensors.... lol, I asked a couple days ago about which ones I need for my 2000 max and noone responded. I'm needing the bank 1 and bank 2 sensors. Do I just buy two of the #250-23000 from the site? and should I go ahead and replace the downstream sensor as well?

I also have a question about what is the best way to fix codes P0158 and
P0159. how many sensors should I replace, what brand, how much, and how hard is it to do yourself?

Where is this sensor located? I have taken a sensor out of my honda when I had it, it was in the cat, so I pulled off the entire exhaust and worked on it off the car, its much easier that way then laying on your back. then PB blast let it sit and then an o2 socket.

I tried all the mentioned above, and nothing worked. I pulled the section that it was in (the 8" section of pipe after the cat that is offset to accomodate the sensor) and put it in a vise. Stripped the thing off completely. I've never run across anything more stubborn in my life, save my wife. Finally I took the cutting torch to it and heated it up until the sensor basically melted out. The threads on the inside of the pipe are totally ruined and I brazed a small quarter sized piece if iron over the hole to cover the leak. Should I re-tap the hole? If I do, the stock sensor won't fit right? Maybe I should bite the bullet and get a new cat back? Any suggestions?

If it were me I would Take it to and exhaust shop and have them cut the old bung whole off and weld a new one on. Or you could just buy a nut that has matching threads to those on the 02 sensor and weld it on there yourself. If you have access to a welder. Hope this helps

if it is the rear o2 sensor behind the cat you can forget taking it out and putting it in. did mine three weeks ago. When you take out the 02 sensor the thread will strip itself and strip the thread in the pipe it screws into. you will have to buy the little side bar it screws into and the new 02 sensor. the bar is about 24 dollars and is only availabe at the dealer. the dealer is aware of this problem that is why they make the bar available. when i took mine out the thread on the 02 senor and in the pipe was stripped so i had to take it to a muffler shop and get my friend to weld the new pipe on their and then i put the 02 sensor in. make sure you are at a shop when you take it out or you will be driving around sounding like you have glass packs on your car.

I replaced all four O2 sensors and didn't come across this problem -- may be isolated in the person's case. I did check the threads of the old sensors and they are crisp and ready for another install.

I would advise you to get a thread chaser before installing the new O2 sensors.

why? I had no problems, except for it being a tight fit and figuring out the right socket and ratchet to use. lol took me about 2 hours to do it. Not a bad thing considering how much the stealerships charge to do it. anyway, I had no problems, just need some smaller hands to get to them.

To clean up the threads so the new sensor goes in easily and has a good seal around the threads.

Good luck with the sockets... I used it once on the after-cat sensor and ended up twisting the socket itself... Now, it may work in your case, but it did not in mine

did you warm your car up first, and spray it with penetrating oil before you tried taking it off?

Oh yeah, used up a can of Liquid Wrench... First spray was the night before and I left it over night hoping it would help... Then I sprayed again in the morning when I tried to work crack it... I busted the sensor socket ($30) when I tried with it, then I used a large 22mm wrench with a pipe and no luck... So I put on a simulator ($25) and called it a day Should have done it right away and save myself the trouble...

Man, I feel sad for you guys who could not get the O2 out. It took less that 10 ft. pounds to unscrew them, put the socket in and one turn anti-clockwise and it came off!!!

Now while under the car, sometimes one could get confused with respect to clockwise/anti-clockwise -- hoping you weren't inadvertently tightening the sensor!!!
