many mufflers are straight through mufflers like focuz, obx and many others, mostly universals. are they legal? if they are, than you dont need a muffler at all do you? so can i just have my piping after my cat go straight to a tip? would that be legal? thanks

I think they are required by law because even though some mufflers are straight through they still curb sound in some way. . . You may be able to get away with not having one on the car, but you will more than likely be cited for a noise violation.

Even aftermarket mufflers can get you a ticket if the noise levels are too high.

you definetly need a muffler to stay legal, but if you have the tip in there good you might never notice, butt the tip up against a glass pack.

Whats with you and wanting the loudest car in the world? You post like 3 threads a day on ideas of how to make your car super loud. Just gut everything between the engine and the tailpipe. Run without an exhaust system at all. Just have an extension pipe come out of the Y-pipe. Thats it. Why would anyone want to make their car super loud? Its just annoying. You set off car alarms and wake people up at night. Its just plain rude! Thats just my opinion though. No reply needed.

The worst part about loud cars is they sound like beaterz. =P

Old cars which are breaking down, having engine problems, having parts falling off, those are loud cars.

A modern car should be fast quiet and sleek.

I don't know the standards everywhere, but I know at least in Florida you have to be below a 90-dB noise level or else the car's illegal, muffler on not.

I thought that you had one before your dust pans. Guess not I want to race you again when you're used to your clutch. I'm pretty sure that you should be able to beat me. I'm thinking Ennis!

Loudest Maxima? I don't understand it at all, but....

With a y-pipe, put a straight pipe where the cat goes and leave the stock B-pipe. Pull off the muffler and call it a day. I did this once just for fun while changing gaskets and it sounds like absolute crap. No matter what you do, the VQs firing order makes the car sound like crap. You can't get a V8 sound out of a V6 or I6. Sorry. The V8 sound is all based around the firing order. The LT1, 4.6, and 5.0 V8s are the best sounding V8s. Period. The LS1 sound like dog crap because they changed the firing order. Even with a Borla or Flowmaster exhaust, these cars don't have the deep healthy tone of the older V8s.

Hey, maybe you could mount one of these in your tailpipe, _DRU_:

http://www.i4cproducts.com/i4c%20pro...20Screamer.htm

Then you'd DEFINITELY have the loudest Maxima in the world.
