Why can't I go 140?

I have a 99 SE L. Runs really great, has warpspeed y-pipe, 2002 exhaust, brand new plugs. It accelerates just fine until it hits 120. I've been able to creep past that to about 125 and then run out of room. My old third gen would go past 120 with ease and accelerate steadliy past 130 and even 140 and still be climbing on the same piece of road that I can barely hit 120. What's the deal? Both cars are autos with just a y-pipe mod, 91 gas. Supposedly the SE had no speed limiter.

Since you have 770 posts I'm going to assume that you've read the bagillion threads saying to click o/d off until you redline 3rd gear and then engage o/d to shift into fourth and you'll keep climbing.

If you're already doing that then just assume God wants you to stop speeding and live.

if u want try that but i garentee you it will only get u to 120 faster. I have a 99 auto and ive hit 140 no problem. and i didnt even turn off o/d. sounds like you hav a governer issue...btw when i hit 140 it was at 2am with nobody on the road

Ive gotten to ~135 on I90 at 4am with a Y pipe and old plugs, old oil, old ATF, old tires, yada yada...not the smartest thing ive done, and i doubt I'll ever try it again. Needless to say, teh o/d trick did nothing for me, didnt get to 135 any faster, didnt get any farther past 135.

I have kids older than some of you. I have been driving fast cars fast for a long time. I know when and how. I do it because I like to, it's fun, it's always been fun. Yeah, I've had a few tickets in my lifetime but never even close to any kind of accident due to my speeding. In traffic I am a very courteous driver. I just want to know why my older 3rd gen with supposedly the same horsepower was MUCH quicker on the top end.
PS. The car has already been lowered.

I've gotten it up to 135 without turning the O/D off, but that was nearly a year ago a few days after I bought it when I was living in a small town with a handfull of cops @ around 10:30 pm. I've moved to the city since and I don't even know if my car could handle getting up to that in it's current condition.

Better intake manifold. It was variable.

and i was going 135 because i wanted to see how fast my car could go. Safety at that speed is a relative term, but i never passed any cars (none on the road near me), and had no distractions, music off, eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel except trying to shift O/D on and off. Like I said, it was VERY stupid, and i dont think i will ever do it again. I like living...

We all do so me dumb stuff, dumb stuff is fun.

In the deserts of Nevada with 4 guys (the lightest of them 170lbs) and luggage from a weekend in Vegas, uphill, I hit 125 max. 97 SE 5-speed. We all have to see just how fast we can get our cars to go, some of us do it safely, some of us don't.
If you have a good safe place to try it, I see little harm, try experimenting with the o/d issue, try different wheels and tires see if it helps, try gas from a different station. I suppose it is possible you got a computer that was meant to go in a GXE or something too, even Nissan isn't perfect.

Hymm, I will admit the USIM will hit the wall around 120ish as far as really pulling but it will pull up to 140+ (give or take speedo error)

In my experience with auto Maxima's (I30 in particular) the 4th gear is a bit tall for real acceleration anyway. That coupled with the USIM as well as the amount of road you are working with =

I've hit 120 and I think it was pretty stupid. Plus I don't have the o/d button anymore so, can't use that trick. I did ptatohed's shift **** mod so I had to cut the o/d. Also that certain percentage of gas that was used when going 120 can come handy now cause of the rising gas prices. The max now I hit is around 100 trying to get to work cause I over slept. On the way home I go about 70 80. save gas and live happily. Also if you have a gov chip you can't go past 115 or so I think. I thought I read a thread saying that.

The VE has a variable intake and has significantly better top-end than a stock VQ, which falls flat on its face after 5.5K or so. Nevertheless, you should be able to reach 140.

Bryan, try removing the factory intake and putting on a short ram intake. That's what enabled me to get to 135mph once with my car (only once). That was before the wheels and adding sound deadening (still shouldnt make a difference). The tires are much wider than the factory wheels, so that's also potentially why.

Have you replaced the spark plugs yet that I gave you? It's probably due for a change soon. Coppers only last 30k.

Let me know.

BlueC- Yeah I changed the spark plugs about a week ago. Made myself a permanent spark plug changer by welding a 10' extension to a spark plug socket. No more coming apart with the socket on the plug!! It runs great but I guess from what everyone says on the 3rd and 4th gen forums, the 3rd gen VE just had a stronger top end. I might fiddle with it some, but it's not that big a deal.

haha try 220 in a ferrari.. after that you never wanna go that fast again. plus when you drive the speed limit again everything seems so meaningless. The power of the F50, wish my aunt still dated that guy. To give my opinion though I' ve went over 140 in the max. Dumb idea period.

If you wana go that fast you need to do this. Please watch the video and take notes on what you have to install to accomplish this feat.

Where in St. Pete do you do your speeding, I've been down there and there seems to be a lot of traffic.

Well as far as speed there's certain nights when Gandy Bridge isn't infested with cops infact theres hardly anyone. It's over a mile long stretch, straight decently wide, but def. not enough for a big mistake. Anyways you just have to go out there and scout it out certain nights and depending on the week you can do runs. We usually have our cells on us and we go in teams to avoid the law.. we dont do it because we think its safe, or because its cool. We just constantly try to get our times down and so with a stop watch and some shifting we get up there. But yeah generally its SUPER crowded and busy. Now watch some Inet cop bust us next time we go out there (@ssholes).

But I might be moving to Indiana pretty soon, and there in Greendale/Lawrenceburg its pretty quiet. Anyways the 220 thing was done in a Ferrari F50 special edition that my aunts ex-husband had. The fastest I've been outside that is about 160 in an '06 auto G35 sedan. Speed isn't everything obviously though I myself love the pull off the line..

Ferrari F50: Top Speed: 201.9 mph / 325.0 km/h

This may sound stupid but I am very interested with this thread, i have never been able to get my car over 125, the power just isn't there, the engine is internally beautiful, clean maintained everything, no codes and no there isn't a governer, there just isn't enough power, even with o/d off you still can only get about 120 then its like a wall, i know it can go faster i was on a strip of highway at like 3am and there was a slight downhill where i hit 130 but thats it...suggestions? i have a hacked intake at the moment seeing as thats been voted best for slightly modded cars.

You're missing the point. The VE was an auto too and justs wastes the VQ on the top end.

Ya and a VE 5 spd would waste a VE auto low end high end mid range etc.

In the '99 he would have alot easier time getting it past 120 being 5 spd.

Lastly you most likely will never even reach 120 at the track, so deflate your ego some and for all you guys who have the urge to go over 100 do it at the track where it really means something.

Tall gears + VQ USIM = top speed strugle.

I forgot to mention, it was much easier to get past 120 before with the Dynomax muffler. I quieted down the exhaust and put on the stock intake after that. That's why its harder now, that and the tires.

The VI on the VE makes a big difference for top speed.

I miss the gas mileage on the VQ. I'm spending $250+/month on gas right now, and I only have a 10 minute commute everyday.
