Need some advice with my cooling fan.

Hi guys, I have a problem, my cooling fan near my radiator is acting crazy now, its like vibrating and making this loud noise, so i popped the hood to check out whats wrong. Next thing you know, i see the cooling fan shaking back and forward. Then later I drove around, my car started to overheat. So can anyone tell me whats wrong and if I do have to replace the fan, do I just get the blade, motor, or do I have to get the whole assembly? I called up nissan and told me the whole thing would cost around 300 something, so I want to see if I can just find some parts and piece it up together. Thanks alot guys.

Could it just be a loose screw holding the fan? Or perhaps the entire assembly is just loose.

Do you have twin fans? I have an FSM for the '96 Infiniti I-30t, and it has twin fans driven by electric motors. Maybe the Max had only one fan, belt driven.

Well i guess its twin fans, because one of them is for the A.C. and one is for cooling.

There are two fans.
And they both cool the radiator and the A/C heat exchanger, since one rad is directly in front of the other.

Probably your fan bearing is shot. You'll need to replace the fan. Entirely.

Something has to be loose. When the car is OFF, move the whole thing around and find out where it's loose from and then compare it to the other side (if applicable) and see what that side looks like. If there's a screw/bolt/nut missing then you have solved your problem.

I have a similar problem where one of my fan blades is loose in the motor shaft. Can you pull the shroud off the radiator without removing the radiator?

Thanks

I would say check out all screws and stuff first. Then kind of watch it and see whats actually moving. If its the blades really moving bck n fwd on whatever it spins on, just might be bearings. Try looking for a fan alone to help cut down the cost.

First make sure the fans aren't kicking on and there's not an easy fix like Snypa said.

Otherwise, you'll probably have to replace the whole fan assembly. I had to do the same back in June. Don't pay $300. I was quoted the same price. Instead, I ordered one from go-part.com for $100 + shipping. FTW!

Installation was cake since I was also swapping rads. This would probably be quicker, easier, and cheaper than to frankenstein a fan assembly together from old parts.

FWIW, the new fans are a bit loud when they kick on, but I only really hear them when outside the front of the car. But holy crap do they spin fast and keep everything cool. I've been very happy with them so far...
