Failed Emissions Inspection - "Not Ready" Status

Hi all,

I need your inputs once again.

It's that time of the year again for me to get my emissions inspected for the state of New York.

I tested it once... it failed - "Not Ready" State
I tested it again at another place... it failed - "Not Ready" State

I was advised to drive it around for a while so I got on the highway and drove it around for about 45 min.

I tested it a third time... same result.

The mechanic asked me if I had the battery disconnected recently.
I tell him no.

I asked him if the computer might be resetting itself every time I turned the engine off.
He said he checked for that - wiring and fuses were all good.

My Check Engine light or any light for that matter is NOT on and has not been on for a while.

This was the last time my Check Engine light came on and below was the work done on my car back in February '06- after which the light never came on again:

NEW HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR
NEW VALVE CONTROL (in the fuel system although I'm not exactly sure where)

In March '06 I got a new battery. This was because I cranked it too many times but the engine wouldn't turn. So I ended up towing it and the mechanic said the engine was "flooded" with fuel because the starter turned too slowly allowing fuel to build up over time in the engine. He allowed the fuel to evaporate but I said I didn't want a new starter.

In April '06 I replaced the CV boot on the driver side axle.

My car has been working fine since then. No lights. No starting problems. Good MPG. I will need a wheel alignment soon but this shouldn't really cause any problems with testing emissions.

I don't know what else to do at this point and I'm not getting any good advice from the mechanics around here.

As always, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

There are 8 emission status monitors. You can connect a ODBII code reader to see which one is not ready. In the owner manual there is a procedure to get them ready.

i live in NY and have never gotten an inspection actually done. Just come up to the guy and ask him to come speak to you, hand him maybe a 20 and tell him the car is fine make it work. He won't say no.
Just an idea, i mean it is NY everything is easy here.

ummm, i dont know if this helps but a buddy of mine failed his emissions tests multiple times cuz his ECU took too long to communicate with the stations computer, repalced the ECU and it passed.

Down here in the south, you just need to know the right place to bring it. Maybe there is a place like there near you, a place where they take your money, and if your car looks ok, just put a sticker on it, and good to go.
(I have never had a problem with my max, although my inspection expired at the end of april.) My brothers 300 zx made it at this one place that only looks at the car, he did not even give them the keys, and he got his. His backup lights do not work, so he never would have passed inspection.

to pass the new inspection they take another car instead of yours and it passes and they give you the sticker. It's not that hard...

I had this issue the last time I my car went through the inspection. I drove the car for over a thousand miles with no change in the status of the monitors. I had 3 that said "Not Ready", the limit is 2. I finally out of frustration reset the computer. A few weeks went buy and I was able to pass the test.

This whole experience totally sucked. At least the guys at the shop would just let me pull right up and hook up the scanner machine to let me know if it was good to go. I did this many, many times. I think the guys at the shop were almost as happy as me to finally get this resolved . I will have to go through the testing in a few months, hopefully all is still well.....

Simple solution- Buy 2-3 cans of Sea Foam. put one in a full take of gas, another in your crankcase( put it in your oil) and put another straight your pcv valve...GUARANTEE UR GONNA PASS EMISSIONS!

How is that gonna help his "not ready" status?

Some people don't read threads, they just respond.

It is not an issue with not passing the emissions, it is an issue with the monitors.

Keep driving around...

If it does not change you cuold do what I did, which is reset the computer. Doing this makes them all not ready, and then after driving a while they kick in. Doing this finally made all of mine kick in except 2, which was enough to pass.
