suspension gurus please enter

ok i got a 99 maxima, i am prob gonna go with kyb agx (adj.)and want to go with the tein 2.0/1.8 springs.

here are my questions.
1. will i need a camber kit, or any bushings?
2. will these hold up in new england, and is this a good choice?
3. will i have axle problems due to the 2inch drop.
4. will the springs being 2.0 in the front and 1.8 in the rear, will these sit level?

thanks for the help cant wait to get this ****.

1 Yes
2 No, winter will kill them
3 Most likely
4 Wheel gaps will be even but the car will have a slight rake, with the front being lower overall.

Honestly you are far better off with full coilovers. Teins are on the bump stops and ride horrible. You may as well not even run springs.

For coilovers:

Tein Basics (no camber plates)
Ksport
D2
JIC
Progress/Cattman

For spring strut combo:

Any spring with no more than a 1.7" drop paired with Koni yellows, Tokico Illuminas, or KYB AGX.

And finally if you wanted sleeve coilovers dont get anything but Ground Control and shortened Koni yellows.

Will the 1.7 keep me from having axle problems

word...i am loving my Progress with KONI Yellows....Yellows are gonna be more expensive but well worth it......
for the most part 1.7 wont be as harsh on axles....any lowing puts more stress...but typically anything under a 2" drop will be ok for camber and axles...I had Tein s-techs and i hated them with a passion

They are decent. Nothing special but work fine for daily use. They are very harsh so if you value comfort go with Illuminas.

Ksport springs are a joke, they are too low and too soft. Their coilovers are great for the money.

i am gonna go with the agx cause i can get all 4 real real cheap! thanks for you help, one more thing can you tell me what the top 3 springs on the market would be, and when you say more durable, what would the shock strut like be with lets say 1.7 drop? DD

IMO top 3 springs

Eibach
Progress
H&R...

from what i have read AGX tend not to last as long under lowered Conditions than Illuminas

The best suspension setup without shelling out for a complete coilover kit, IMHO, is Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable gas shocks (you can pick em up new in-box on ebay for about $430 total, that comes with the bumpstops) or KONI Yellows, which I know are very good as well (but will be more like $500-600), with a under 2" drop spring, I chose the Eibach Prokit springs which drop the chassis about 1.5" and have a progressive spring rate but I hear Tein H-Techs are a good choice as well, finally, shell out the $50-70 for all your "energy suspension" polyurethane bushings (well worth the expense). A Front Strut Tower Brace or Rear Sway Bar will help with body roll at high speed.

And if you're not doing the work yourself, remember most importantly, that after any major suspension work you are going to need an alignment, despite what your mechanic recommends, so getting everything done in one go will be most cost-effective. Safe travels.

informative thread.

what about for those who want coilovers(me), is there really zero comfort in the ride?

and would i be better off getting spring/struts if i want at least a bit of comfort but still awesome handling?

Bump stops(im pretty sure) are necessary--- i believe it reduces the impact of the strut being compressed. You can get some bump stops from Eibach for a lot cheaper than 143.00.. dont remember how much though
I have the Kyb agx's with the eibach bump stops and they've been good to me--
I had used the stock bump stops for a long while and it felt fine
YOu can use the stock ones.. just cut them off of the strut boot(thats what I did)

I honestly dont think you need the boot itself.... the bumpstop is attached to it.. it's the hard rubber piece on top of the boot that has a metal washer attached to it. As long as that piece isnt torn or messed up.. you can use it..

Anybody, correct me if i'm wrong!

Honestly you are far better off with full coilovers. Teins are on the bump stops and ride horrible. You may as well not even run springs.
I suppose everyone has their own experience but for me the Teins have not been a bad spring to run on the street at all. They do feel a bit soft for how low they are but due to their progressive design they handle better in hard driving situations than you would think with light around town driving impressions. They due permit more body roll than I would like but I would not compare it anywhere near stock springs. My wheel gap is literally bigger in the rear, and this can be noticed on most S-Tech cars. I also do not experience camber wear in the front (or if I do it is not perceivable). I do not have my bumpstops trimmed to an extreme amount but I do have them trimmed, I have hit the stops ONCE since I have had them in on a metal construction cover in the road at speed, the stock suspension would have done the same thing. I also find the AGX's to control them quite well. Occasionally on quick, jarring impacts they can be harsh but after going through a few different settings I find them to control the Teins very well.

A couple people i know said that they liked them. I hope that the progress springs will do me right. Why would you trim your bumpstops?

The dustboots are to protect the struts & shocks from debrise getting inside of them! I also got KYB dustboots from Cattman for $78 shipped. The Progress springs were $143.

Bumpstops: Allows you to maintin control of where the upward travel of your suspension stops & prevents over compression & premature wear to your springs. The point of adding bumpstops is to control flex.

When you go lower, the strut will already be more compressed when the car is on the ground than with the stock suspension, so there is less amount of travel before you get to the bumpstop.

while in there you might want to think about replacing your strut mounts, my maxima front struts aren't too bad but is making a lot of noise due to worn strut mounts.
