I need new tires and I thought I'd see if anyone had an opinion. I currently have Dunlop SP sport 4000's and really quite like them - they're very progressive and let you know way before they break away on cornering.

But not having tried any other tires on my Max I was wondering what you guys like and don't like.

On a related point, I always bought tires with the LOWEST wear rating thinking that meant you got the softest, stickiest rubber and hence better traction. Is there any truth in this or am I full of $heet?

 

That is semi-true.

The the treadwear is determined arbitrarily by each tire manufacturer.

Bridgestone could have 2 tires with 500 treadwear. One tire might come with a 40k warranty while the other is a 60k.

On the same note, a Bridgesone 500 isn't the same as a Firestone 500, which isn't the same as a Toyo 500, etc.

 

I know not everyone is as broke as me, but Ihave Fuldas(goodyear knockoff)on mine. I love em so far, only had them about 3 months. they handle very well, and I make a 500 mile road trip every week and they seem to be wearing great . Paid 430 for 4 mounted and balanced, they have nearly the same tread as the Goodyear Eagle F1's, are W-rated. I like em, best bang for the buck I found. Got em at NTB.

 

Im running bfgoodrich touring pro t/a tires. Great tires in the snow,rain,dry.

 

im running Kumho ECSTA ASX and theyre $69 per tire from tire rack and they're an amazing tire at a cheap price without sacrifing quality. Thanks south korea.. performance summer though, but I can deal with that as I'm in FL. W rated.

 

I'm happy with my Falken ZE-512s. I've also owned SP Sport 5000s in the past and they were a decent all season performance tire.

If you want a safe street tire with maximum dry and wet grip, (but no snow), try the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3. I have them on my autox car and they perform very very well, and their tirerack rating is also very high.

For a maximum grip all season tire, I'm told the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S is the rubber to buy, but they are damn expensive.

i absolutly love the bridgestone turanza LSV, not cheap but amazing tire, best in every category, the sidewalls are rock solid, grip is excellent, wear is excellent, and wet handeling is like no other tire ive driven on! dont get the falken 512, while the grip is great the sidewalls are soft as hot butter, feels like ur driving on jello.

I tried BFG Comp T/A's once and absolutely hated them. The car wallowed through corners on then. I have been using Potenza RE950's for several years now, but they have recently been discontinued. Most recently, I settled for the Slightly lower priced replacement tire (I think it's called a G009) and while I don't really like the tread pattern, I don't have any complaints yet.

 

The LS-V is an excellent tire.

I do have to disagree with the rock sold sidewall comment though. That tire doesn't have a stiff sidewall by any measure. They are competent performers, but they were designed with luxury in mind. If you're looking for a stiff sidewall, check out the Falken Azenis RT615.

Which ones? If you're referring to the RE92s, then you'll be quite pleased with just about everything else out there.

 

I am running Yokohama Avid H4S (H-rated) now and they seem pretty good to me and are highly rated on www.tirerack.com.

Using Yokohama Avid V4s, they are good to me but due to no vlsd are wearing unevenly up front. I think they are good for 90~ a tire.

so far i've tried Yokohama AVS ES 100, Pirelli Pzero Nero M&S, Bridgestone Potenza RE750, and Falken GR451 Beta.. and i must say the falkens Own all the tires ive tried.. in tread wear, handling, looks, and traction..

 

I love my Bridgestones Potenza RE-950's. Very nice in the rain for me

 

So the BF Goodrich Comp T/A's are the only tire to get a negative vote. The Bridgestone Potenza RE950's get three votes closely followed by the Falkens.

Yep, I got new Avon Tech 550's, 235/40-18 WR rated, for $114 ea based on the reviews making them #1 in the A/S ultra high performance category. This would be my 3rd set of WR tires--neither of the last two lasted very long, Sumitomo and Kumho. These probably wont last that long either (25-30k), but since the price was low and they were rated #1, why not? They're made in USA too, so "Avon Tyre" is just a british name. I like everything a la James Bond though. Funny, years ago people on this forum loved the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S at $247 ea. Don't seem to hear them touting there 250 tires anymore!

 

The RT615 is a DOT race tire. To compare them to the Falken Ziex ZE512s (which are half the price, at under $100/corner installed) is silly.

I've had Yokohama AVS ES 100's and Pirelli PNero Zero's. I had the Yoko's for much longer and the tread wear was excellent. They lasted for a long time. I'm not too far in with the Pirelli's, so I don't know much about them other than they feel good on the road.

 

TOYO PROXES 4 my mann... ive had em since january and ive been beatin the crap out of them and they are lastin quite well... 300 treadwear but you would think its 100... especially for an ALL_SEASON tire. I am very happy with this setup, on 16's. I paid 480 and change but i believe it was worth it. Absolutely love these tires.

AND they have a sick tread pattern, which greatly influenced my decision haha... personally id rather have the cooler lookin tread pattern than have it last longer, but these tires rock man.

I'm with you on that one. I have these tires on my maxima and they seem to grip very well! In terms of grip, they've exceeded my expectations. Treadwear is low, so they'll last a long time. They're driveable in snow, but you really should get snow tires, but they will do for a while. In the rain, they're umm... I dunno, am scared of driving quick in the rain! They seem to be just fine in the rain as well.

I got the Bridgestone Potenza G009 on my max. It's a good all season tire and also good in dry and wet..
The G009 are rated #2 high performance all season tire on tirerack.com.

 

yeah toyo proxes fz4 235/40zr18 had them for three seasons and still have good tread on them mine are like rubber bands so the sidewall is stiff and Ive yet to here them give an all out tire scream around sharp turn and I dont drive like a wuss. but they are terrible in the snow and not the geatest in the rain but competent overall

Right now I have BFG , they aren't bad . Previosly I had Michelin Energy on Mitsubishi Lancer and they gave a very smooth soft ride
