I have enjoyed reading your posts about driving/racing your Maximas. I thought I would share one of my experiences. I have been traveling frequently these days but I try never to miss one of my children's school events. I was flying in to SF airport from a day trip in Oregon. My flight was supposed to arrive at 6 pm and my daughter had a concert in Mountainview at 7 pm. I figured it would be tight with rush hour traffic but I should make it. My main concern was how long it was going to take from the plane touching down until I walked to my car and got out of the parking lot. Of course my flight was delayed 20 minutes. When I finally got into my car I hauled out of the airport as fast as I could. I crossed over to highway 280 which is a longer distance but better traffic flow (no car pool lane). I drove like mad weaving in and out of traffic. I was able to accelerate to over 100 mph on several short bursts. I was impressed on how well the car responded. I felt confidence cutting through the traffic. I made it to my seat 5 minutes before the concert started. I felt grateful and proud to have a car like the Maxima. The concert was less exciting.

With all due respect, your driving habits don't quite match someone who has the responsibility of children. How do you justify that?

It's not like he's talking about racing someone at 100+MPH on a busy freeway while drinking & driving or somethin like that, or even bragging about speeding.. he had somewhere to go, and was simply stating how impressed he was at the Maximas ability to respond to his needs.. I don't think there's anything wrong with that..

BTW, I heard the carseats are definitely good for at least 10 HP

It looks like he was speeding in an attempt to fulfill the responsibility of parenting by making it to the concert on time. I'm sure that y sleep doesn't normally take his Max to the fullest right?

Please don't miss my point:

If he was killed in an accident then his kids would be disappointed for a very long time. And many traffic deaths are caused by someone who was in a hurry. I know most of you hate to hear this sort of thing, but I believe it has to be said.

Point taken, BUT:

There are two types of fast driving. You can drive fast stupidly, or you can drive fast smartly.

I hit 100mph on occasion on my treks up and down Interstates, but you'll never see me making any sort of maneuver on the roads where I'm not 100% confident of the safety of the move.

If I have even the slightest doubt then I bug out and abort, even if it means I get stuck behind some fart going 55mph for a few miles.

If you're giving the road 110% of your attention you can drive fast while being safer than 95% of the other retards on the road that are loafing along at 65mph only giving 10% of their attention to the road.

I'd much rather be driving at high speeds with people giving their full attention to the road than tards that aren't paying any attention at all that tend to crowd highways these days - those are the ones that end up causing accidents - the morons that aren't paying any attention, and then it doesn't matter if you're going fast or not.

I hope for y sleeps sake and his kid's sake that he was driving fast SMARTLY and not stupidly

Safety always comes first!!

Wow, I didn't expect so many comments this quickly. Thank you for your responses. My point is that the car is flexible in handling different situations and it instills confidence. At no point did I feel out of control. Magellan, I respectfully suspect you don't have car seats in your Maxima. Most adults behave differently among children than when they are only among grown ups. Drivng styles change with circumstances. I drive much faster on the open road alone than when I with the kids in traffic. Like all resposible parents, my life and disability insurances are paid up. You made your obvious point about safety, thank you. I am not sure if it needed to be said, but no harm in reminding all of us to be careful. By the way no speeding tickets or accidents so far in my vehicle.

As far as the mods, you might be amazed by gains derived from a child seat. Try this, get a used seat at any thrift shop and put in the back middle bench position. Next time you are stopped for speeding, apologize for speeding, ask for a break and tell the officer that you are sorry but you wanted to make it home in time to see your child before they fell asleep, that the baby sitter is threatening to leave if you don't get home soon, or something along those lines. Add a random picture of a child to your dash or keys for more effect. It might work, can't hurt. Most police sees themselves as protecting families so they cut you some slack. You can always throw the seat into our cavernous trunk (watch out for those large hinges!)when you need the back seat space. Magellan, please don't remind me to always tell the police the truth when I get pulled over. y

I used to drive fast and loose in various sports cars as a single man. But then I got married and obtained child seats in my old ‘91 Maxima, as my wife and I raised two children. But I never thought that a paid up insurance policy was an adequate substitute for a live father, so I changed my driving habits.

That's all I have to say on the matter.

Warning...road rage.

I used to drive fast too (not as much now) and it's quite easy in the max. One time I changed lanes in front of another car (but I made sure I was completely cleared) and he followed me off the freeway (57) and called me out to fight or something. I didn't pay much attention and I supposed he finally calmed down. Then he just made a right turn. So watch out for that road rage.

I leave at about 5:40 AM, so I won't get stuck in the parking lot. Traffic on 101 is not that light at that time either.

My clock alarm goes off at 5AM...then 5:15AM...then 5:30AM...then 5:45AM. I can rarely wake up that early any more, but I do try to get out of the house between 6AM to 7AM. If I hit 101 South after 7AM, I'm usually doomed to park there. It didn't used to be like this five years ago. Gotta love progress, eh?

Which always makes me question how the heck did my Maxima get hit in an accident weeks back in that kind of stop-and-go traffic?!? Stupid drivers.

I would hate leaving for work at that time. I like driving on empty freeways.

hehehe....I contend with the parking lot that is the DC beltway every day. It doesn't matter when you leave, it is always a mess with all the construction and stuff Still though, I get into work by 7:45 and leave around 5:30.

My "commute" is less than 4 miles on local streets. That's why I like to open it up when I do get on the 280 autobahn (when the child safety seats are unoccupied, of course)
