Ever hear of a 'slick shifted' trans?
The whine has spread to all 5 gears and the drivers side axel is a little lose and is leaking slowly.
In about 2 weeks I am having a used trans with the vlsd put it. The guys putting it in are asking me if I want them to make it a slick shift? From what they say, if they do this it will be a lot easier to power shift the trans without using the clutch. He said something about grinding off every other tooth on something inside the trans for gears 2 3 and 4 and I think he said something about totaly grinding all the teeth off of the syncros or something.
Anybody know anything about this type of thing?

mardi ran a 11.4, and trust me, if HE'S at that end of the spectrum, and HE'S not doing this slick gear crap, why would any of us? Not to say that we should do what he does. Im just sayin, if its really benefitial, someone would have tried it by now.

- Creating stress cracks on the gears. The shock of shifting without the clutch (like some hondas can) is massive, and the gears could crack and peices break off. I have friends with hondas that used to do that shifint w/o clutch crap, those trannies would last AT MOST 2 months before they had to be changed.
If you want to do it, go for it, tell us how it goes, but dont count on the transmission lasting.

omg i hate additives. If the fluid was changed at its intervals and no El CHeapo fluid was used, there would not be any varnish TO BEGIN WITH. Same goes for motor oil. I remove my VCs and those cams are pure bling bling, heads have a clean coat of mobil 1 inside. I take them off on my friend's stock motor, burnt redish brown everywhere, nasty!
Chrysler invented the slick shift in the 60's for their large muscle cars. They would grind off every other synchro tooth and remove the synchronizers. This makes the gearbox basically a dog style box (ie Hewland, Staffs etc). These were used in racing applications only because they crunched a lot and didn't last long. I had one of these in an old drag car. I didn't like it.
I wouldn't do that. I work at a performance transmission shop and we definately don't advocate it. Like Neilca said they are basically making a fake little dog engagement system, one which will wear out REALLY quick because dog engagement teeth are usually at least half an inch wide, whereas the engagement teeth in our transmissions are about 1/8th inch wide. You'd be replacing the sleeves and possibly the gears in no time if you were banging no clutch shifts with any regularity.
