New Chrome Gauge Rings (Pics)
New Chrome Gauge Rings (Pics)
So I finally got around to buying some chrome gauge rings. I got them from http://motostorm.com/gpage2.html1.html for $35 shipped. They look really really good. They were probably a better interior mod than my Nismo pedals & Momo shiftknob put together. They really accent the interior well. Also I thought you should be able to just press them in without having to glue them, and I was Right! You can just snap them in there slots, and they are tight. They will not go anywhere, I can barely pull them out by hand. That worked out perfectly, cause I did not want to glue them, that is hard & messy. So let the pictures speak for themselves.

can i replace my digital gauge?
I have a 1989 maxima with broken digital instrument cluster. The temp and fuel still work but others do not display. The digital instrument cluster is hard to get, so I want replace it with an analog one from such 1990 up maxima. can it fit for my car? Thanks for answering my question.

daaaaaaaamn that looks awesome... so much so i've emailed the company to query them on whether or not they'd be willing to ship the set overseas (i'm based in melbourne, australia). I dont care how much shipping costs are, i'm dead set on doing what you've just done.
On a side note, how easy is it to remove the see-through plastic cover thingy in the dash in order for the gauge rings to be fitted? im praying i dont have to tear the entire dash away from the car because if thats the case i'd rather pay a professional a bunch of cash to do it all.

I'm sure they will ship to you down under.
Removing the plexi-glass cover is quite simple. It's held on by 4 tabs, which you will see once you remove it. It's removing all the panels which give you access to the speedometer cluster that is the hard part, but even that's not that hard - more time consuming if anything.

It's not really an 'eeek' process at all. it's quite simple. It is just time consuming and requires the removal of 3 trim pieces (held in by several screws), and the various plugs which are plugged into the back of the bezels (such as the clock, or the hazzard lights, etc...).
In the picture I made here (borrowed original from Duckman's pic) you can see the 3 bezels that need to be removed.
- First you remove the radio bezel. (remember to remove the ashtray there is a screw here - in addition to the other screws holding the radio trim bezel - just feel around for them if you can't see them)
- then remove the steering column bezel and plugs (remember to tilt steering wheel down)
- then remove speedo/air vent bezel. This one takes a little bit of patience because the steering wheel is in the way even when you tilt it down. The plastic is flexible when you need it to be though, so bend where you must, just be gentle about it.
Once you have these 3 bezels unscrew the speedometer and detach plugs. You will now have access to the front and back of the unit. This would be a good time to put new bulbs in the back of the unit if you want to change the color of the speedometer. Bulbs used for this are wedge type 168/194. Either type will work and I believe 194 is a slightly higher watt bulb.
The main thing to remember is there are a few 'hidden' screws for the trim pieces. Just feel around the edges of the pieces before you yank it out.

It's been a few years since I did these mods, so if I've forgotten something - feel free to jump in and make a note, or correction.

Wow! thanks for going to such an effort there... I must say it puts the mind at ease somewhat about tackling it myself... i may just give it a bash and see how far i get... i've taken off the radio bezel a few times in the past so thats a bonus too!
thanks but still

You can look here on Craig's site to see all the screws and such you need to remove.
His site is very helpful for other things as well.

I'm not sure of the quality of generic wedge bulbs found on eBay, but I'm guessing they will be cheaper there.
I will inquire about a group deal. I'm also gonna see if they will give me a refund for my rings, if I give them rights to my pictures. The one they have on there website for the 3rd Gen rings is terrible.
