My MAXima Money Pit$$$$$$$

So, did I buy a POS or what? Like, I love my car, but it hates me. I bought the car in Dec 04 with 162,000KM. It now has 208,000KM. Should I be selling this thing? I have done my brakes Twice (one time a pin siezed and my brakes wore funny) Altranator 2 times. Starter once, Knock senser. O2 Senser, Fuel Pump, Fuel Filter, Spark Plugs, The AC is CURRENTLY broken, The battery connector terminals need to be re-do as they are corroding.

Last night my car died AGAIN. battery light came on then the ebrake, then seat belt, so I pulled into a parking lot (rush hour) and started playing with gas, only to find my engine in "putting" mode. Car stals, never starts again. Looks under the hood, lots of corrosion on negative terminal. Clean that, reconnect + and -. Boost, runs a football field, dies again. The belt to my alt is spinning , but who knows what that means. Anyways, the POS is back in the garage. Does your guys car break this much? Should I be expecting this at that many KM's? This is my first car, so I dont know any better.

Sell the stylish Comfy Maxima that always breaks, or tuff this one out?????

Bad battery cables, slipping belt, etc. Take care of the little things and maybe you'll have less electrical problems. Start at the heart of the problem. Resistance in your connections is the enemy.

It sounds to me like you do not do any preventative maintenance (PM).

- battery terminals should never corrode if they are cleaned properly and have a thin layer of vaseline applied before attaching the cables.
- brake sliders should never seize if the boots are intact and they are serviced (removed and lubricated) annually

IIRC they do not even use salt on the roads in AB, so you will have far fewer corrosion issues than people living elsewhere.

You need to do PM to address potential problems before they occur and leave you stranded. The maxima is no different from any other car in that regard.

Such positive replies. I do love my Maxima. At this point the only car I would replace it with is a Infinity G35 Coupe. Ohhhweee. But, I can't afford that, and I am trying to save for a house.

But it's all true. YMMV, but I just turned 250,000 miles. The only MAJOR mechanical item that has been replaced is the tranny. I have my ORIGINAL alternator. Starters are gonna go at some point (replaced once). Everything else you mentioned IS PM stuff.

160,000 kolimeters so like 100k miles? At 100k, your car should not have that much problems... I'm not a mech but I think you got a bad car man

You bought a used car. Any used car you buy is going to need maintence, now excessive maintence is something too look at. But one must also look at his own driving style, maintence, the parts and more.

There is a thing called wear and tear with any product

Be happy your not on the side of the road.

Man I know what you mean. I got mine and put over 4,500 into it just on fixing parts. I got the thing for $3200 . At this point I'm just gonna sell it and get another maxima. You know when you go over the value of the car in fixing it you need to get a new car.

maintinance is the key, its been said but taking care of the small things will save you lots of problems. I hope you dont think that should you have purchased another car you wouldnt have these problems. Any car will need repairs at some point in time, thats just a given. This is just part of owning a vehicle, atleast you have a forum where people can offer suggestions, and advice that will help you save money on your repair. You may even be able to find a local member who will do repairs needed for you for a much cheaper price than any shop.

welcome to car ownership.

If your battery is constantly corroding then that could be a sign of the alternator overcharging it. Check the voltage at the battery when the engine is revving, shouldnt be more than 14.8 and 14.4 after the car has been running for a while. If its around 15.5 or 16 then you need another alternator.

They had my car for 2 days. When I got the bill it was like a full kick to the crotch. $1276 Can. I said Holy F%#K. I got a hose from my AC replaced, AC recharged, New Alt, and new "hardcore" (dosnt look to hardcore) battery. Car works, but it looks like I might be playing lots of video games to make up for that one.
