I guess the 87 and 88 stereos are completely different. I already tried installing a stereo that looks exactly like yours and it didn't even come close to fitting. The harnesses were different too. If anyone has a good working system that looks like the one at the following URL, please let me know:

Mine is broken - that's why I'm looking for a good used one. The unit comes on and will even accept tapes but no sound comes out. I don't know if it's the stereo or the EQ that's bad but one of them is screwed up. I checked the fuses on the back too and both of them are OK.

Jeremy,
I had the same problem as yours on my 87. It turned out to
be a fuse behind the eq. The fuse wasn't blown but the
contacts around the fuse was connecting with the fuse.
What you need to do is turn your radio on and adjust the
fuse behind your eq to get it going. Hopefully this is
all you need to do without replacing the unit.

connecting to the fuse. Sorry for the confusion

Dude, you are the man! I wiggled the fuse on the EQ and the radio started working. It wouldn't stay connected so I ended up taking the EQ completely apart and I identified the problem - the solder had cracked away from the circuit board where the fuse housing connected to it. I just got out my soldering gun, fixed the connection and reassembled everything. I love it when things can be fixed for free. The radio didn't work when I bought this 87 Maxima for $300 and I've been driving around with no sounds for several months. The morning commute should be more interesting now, he he. Thanks again!
