failed state inspecition and not very happy...

took the max for inspection today and it failed the state part. why...? it's because the power steering belt needs replacement, actually both belts do and in the front clearance light housing (small orange part) the bulb needs to be replaced as well cuz it's burnt out. to replace the bulb behind the orange part in the clearance light, you just take the whole housing off and twist the cap to the bulb right? what about the power steering belt, how diffucult is that to do? they also said the cv boots are torn and the muffler needs replacement in the future because it's rotting in some places. btw...i have a 91 max se, and no mechanical experience either.

dam, my state doesnt check for the CV boots... they just check emissions and for lights basically.....the power steering belt is very simple...... just locate the belt, then locate the one pulley that doesnt attatch to any kind of compressor or anything, and look for an adjusting screw....then all you have to do it loosen the screw and the belt should come off.

im in va, but...this is the first time i went to this shop (a tire center also), and also does state and emission inspections too. ever since then, ive been taking my vechicle to the shell gas station near my house and the inspector there only checked the normal stuff like lights, wipers, hazards, exhaust...etc...etc, but never belts. afterwards he gave a small check list to show all the items that were check and if they were "ok" or if they needed to be "replaced". anyways, what is the bulb replacement number for the light behind the small orange marker in the front clearance light? oh yea, forgot to mention, the guy said he can replace both belts, the bulb and inspect it over again for $200, is this a bit high?

I think the bulb you need is type 1156, (I only remember there being one bulb behind there when I switched out my stocks, and the only other bulb I could find for that area is 194, but (if memory serves me) that's the same type of small bulb used in the gauge cluster so it probably isn't right) As for the belts, $200 sounds reasonable for both (I'm guessing that number includes labor?) and I know what you mean with VA state inspections....although it seems NY was much more stringent about them...I see cars that are definitely not anywhere near roadworthy all the time round these parts.

I am with Cliff Clavin. No inspections in SC. The down side is that I see rolling death traps all over the place. Bald tires, severly worn brokes, broken windshields...

In New York if you have a cool mechanic he'll just do emissions. Then you have those that see one lil bull**** leak he will fail you. $35 If you pass. Or you go to the ghetto and get one from 50 to 100 bucks.

Ha. In my state (MS), $5 gets you a sticker. Sometimes you have to actually bring in the vehicle, but usually not...

Glad Okla doesn't have inspections either! It didn't matter - even when we did have inspections, people were driving POS's all over the place - hasn't really picked up since they changed to no inspections - just saves the hassle of the once a year meaningless $5 waste of time & money

Keep listing. That way I know my options for when I retire. I'm afraid my Max won't be able to pass emission inspections after I'm done.
