1st maxima

ok well hi my name is alice. im new to the forums. i read around alot. read the faqs about the recommended mods to the car you should probably first do. i have a stock 97 maxima (automatic). this car was bought for me by my cousin after he wrecked my civic. i really dont know much about cars. i need to know for an automatic the launch is really slow compared to my manual civic, what mods do you guys recommend i do 1st to help get this car ready for drag racing. the car is pretty powerful for a stock so i know it has some potential. all the ppl i have encountered in the forum so far have been nothing but nice and helpful so i hope i get similar results. thanks in advanced.

p.s- i dont have too much money after registering, insuring and inspecting this car.

just do the y-pipe and put a cone filter(poor man's intake). The car will sound mean and it will go fast....then enjoy....civics just lauch quickly and then go slow right after the lauch....the maxima never stops pulling

well i did the synthetic oils today and im gonna donate asap. im lookin around for the y-pipe & intake since its been recommended in the faqs and this thread, but i talked to someone who knows about cars, they said that that wil put me at approximately 205-210 horses . What else u recommend i do for now besides goin manual? i was thining about goin manual but idk who would do such a job for me. i live in bklyn ny and i dont wanna mess up my car by giving it 2 some one who dont know about cars. any one know any good shops? thanks again

Umm 205-215 at the crank, not at the wheels. Check with MaximumTuning and see if they do 5 speed conversions, if not, Tilley might be close enough?

First of all, congrats on your new car. As of "tip top shape," I would do air filter, fuel filter, flush your fluids, and spark plugs depending on how recently that was done.

Yeah, all the regular maintenance stuff. That should help a little bit. A y-pipe will give you some sig. gains as this is the best bang for the buck.
Check with www.lssexhaust.com for your y-pipe. They are in canada so the cost should be less than that of warpspeed/stealin etc. Good luck with the modding and if your into the drag racing stuff, think United Stated Intake Manifold and 3.5L motor from the newer maxima's. Also SERIOUS weight reduction... for the car.
Take care and welcome to the club.

Do yourself a huge favor and keep it stock. You will thank me in the end. Focus on maintaning it because these little mods add up to quite a bit of money and the power increases are just not worth it. Its an automatic Maxima, a nice family sedan with some ***** under neath those tight jeans. If you want to make it a drag racer you will have to do a lot more than an intake and Y-pipe.

Save up your cash you will need it for more important things

I just got a 95 max for gas, I got a supercharged v-8 truck to go fast which was killing me lately as daily driver, getting 9-11mpg 93octane, but it does pushes out 2.5 times more power than the maxima

the max has 170k miles, what are some key things I should look that might be replacing.

ITs an auto.

I see people paying hundreds of dollars for a piece of metal and a filter, Ebay has some around for 50 bucks, I made myself one for my truck just using a old interior trash can and lining it up to my ram air hood(I took it out when the price of gas went up, your mpg will go down with more of an open air element)

x1000
Do not ask which intake or y pipe is best
Do not ask which springs/struts/coilovers are best
The search is your best friend, read all stickies in 4th gen section, that will save you alot of time. Also visit the advanced performance forums, maybe all motor if you are going that route.

For right now I would tune up the car, air, fuel, oil filters, plugs, run sea foam and do a throttle body cleaning, the throttle body cleaning will help with response.

I dont see how you plan on making money off the car unless you are talking about street racing. If this is your daily driver, and from your original post it looks like it is, the last thing you want to do is drag race it. You will be left with a broken down car and an empty wallet. Please tell us how you plan on making money off it, I am legitimately interested. If you plan on getting it sponsored that is VERY difficult. I dont think you are being realistic with yourself and I hope you dont end up screwing yourself over in the long run. Im speaking from experience, having 2 cars before this one, both civics, that you are wasting your time and money.

If you get that CAI be forewarned that you will have to drive a lot more carefully in heavy rain. If you suck up air through the filter you are going to blow your engine. Probably means avoiding puddles in general.

the real power is in forced induction (turbo / supercharger) or a 3.5, or both! little thing help but dont expect it to pull harder with an intake STICK is a great first step as it sopports more alot more torq eather way be ready to drop 7k for a 12 second car

I think you mean water throught the filter. Also, your filter would have to be completely submerged to damage the engine as water is not combustable.

welcome to maxima.org ! you say you want to drag race a maxima ? what a wild idea ? you could make a good bracket racer out of the auto max, get your launch down, and with some practice you could make some cash potentially, but keep an eye on the old pros, they be hard to beat but anything is possible in a maxima ! have fun with it !

thats exactly why it does the most damage. Water cant be compressed to combustion and causes hydro lock.

@ OP: It sounds like your a young girl with alot of good dreams but no grip on reality. Dont mean that as an attack, but you need to step back and realize that you need a good, stock, daily driver and a play toy on the side.
What you are proposing is not practical, smart, or realistic.

immediately sell your maxima, it's a great car with great potential dont get me wrong and if you want to drop a large sum of money and a lot of work into yes you could have a very quick car...but at the end of the day you would be better off not having your base be a mid nineties 4 door mid sized family sedan. just my two cents

I live my life a 1/4 mile at a time. For those 8 seconds or less, I'm free. What a load of crap.
I'm unsub. to this thread as it's become a pointless thread about junk that only 18 year old kids care about.
"I wanna race and make money off my car." blah, blah, blah.
I'm too old and slow for this kinda talk on this board. BTW, street racing is illegal and kills.

Keep it simple.

I just can't believe she is serious, especially after admitting you dont know much about cars and yet you want to race them? I think its time to re-evaluate what you are talking about here...like what most people have said, please explain what you are talking about here!!!!!!!!!! "Racing for money?"

I mean, do you know how to drive ?

Use the surprise factor. No need to aftermarket except for the Y-Pipe. You got stock civics with a muffler that swear up and down they can beat you. Hand it to them. Don't try to aftermarket your car so you can walk up to a 350Z/G35 or some low-end BMW/Lexus/Merc-Benz. Not worth the money or the risk. This forum is very against street racing. The mention of street racing is only allowed on weekends in the ........ weekend forum. Even the people in that forum have dumped a ton of money in their cars and report losses. You have the biggest disadvantage with that auto BTW.
