Maxima Died on me

Just want to get some opinions from others.

I went to start the car, it started fine, than about 100 feet down the road it died. Lights turn on and the voltage on the battery is 12.7 volts. The starter wont crank over and when I try to start theres a clicking near the fuel filter area.

The car has 170k miles and alternator was whining for a while, I have a new alternator on the way, but want to make sure its the alternator. I just put the battery on my trickle charger(my battery charger is being borrowed by my dad), so hopefully it will have charged up?

All the lights come on the dashboard when I try to start.

Thanks for the help.Wondering what else should i check .

12.7 is pretty low when the car is off (no load). It might be enough to power lights, but not enough to start the car.

Can you hear the starting going? Have you ever regreased it?

Also, when was the last time you changed you fuel filter?

Most likely though, it is your alternator. If you can get the car going enough to Autozone or Advance Auto they can check it free (and your battery too)

12.7 is perfectly fine when the car is off.
you can crank all the way down to 10 volts and still start.

Do you have any aftermarket alarms or remote start setups on it?

A malfuncting alarm has stopped 3 of my cars from cranking recently, each one I just pulled the alarm out and problem solved.

could be a security shut off or something. not sure on the process of resetting it, or maybe you just have to wait it out. See if your starter relay is activating. Find it and hold onto it when someone is tryign to start it. If its clicking and no turning, starter or battery is the problem. If its not clicking, then somethign is preventing the starter from getting the signal to start, bad relay or immobilizer. Check yoru key if its got the NATS(nissan anti theft system) make sure the chip didn't get crushed or something.

Na, no aftermarket alarm, just the stock.

There isn't any chips on the key, there is a clicking sounds like a relay near the fuel filter area I think but than again it was pitch black out and I was dead tired. I took the battery out and put it on the trickle charger last night around 11pm eastern, in about a hour im going put it back on and see what happens.

If anyone else other recommendations i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

Did you try to redo the connections on the battery?

Sounds like you may have a bad fuel pump or the fuse might have blown. Check your fuel pump fuse first, then inspect the lines. Check your dome light when trying to start. Does it blink?

Try unhooking the battery for and hour or two. Can you lock with the keyless remote (do you have one)? Try locking the car with the remote or door, then unlocking (using the key) on the passenger side.

(Though the theft inhibitor would not likely be a reason that your car would suddenly die...)

I did try to the connection on the battery.

I dont think its a fuel pump cause I just changed the fuel filter a few days ago, I took the fuse out for the pump to get the pressure of the lines. The car would try to start with the fuse out for the pump.

I didn't have time to wait 2 hrs to see the car would start again when unhookin the battery, i will fine out within the hour. I dont have a remote , but iw ill try unlockin the pass. door and trunk to disable the alarm if its on.

The starter would still crank if it was a fuel issue... its gotta be power related.

Batteries are weird. My old battery had enough power to power everything except the starter. I also checked it with my multimeter and it checked out fine. I was stumped. I was convinced it was the starter so I bought a new starter and a new optima red battery that was like 30% off for the hell of it. Lucky I installed the battery first and BAM, it started up instantly. I just returned the starter.
