Why do wheels measure different from their rated size?

Well I was measuring the actual rim of my car and it was 16" but I looked at the tire and it said 215/60-15. What's the deal?

It's probably some sort of point of measure thing. Watch it be some sort of thing where the measurement is taken from the bead point and not from the outtermost lip of the rim.

yup, it is physically impossible to fit a 15 inch tire on a 16 inch wheel. well you could do it but the tire would be a little messed up. a guy at my work did it one time and it was pretty funny cause he ripped the tire all the way up to the top of the tread through the sidewall. it was pretty bad.

yea the actual size is measured from the inside part... my 17's are 18.5" if you measure from the tip of the lip
