I would think the cover is only for looks, and so clumsy people don't go prodding the engine too much. You have to pay those Nissan mechanics for something!

*no offence to Nissan mechanics*

Yep, the cover does two things. First, it makes the engine look fancy. No big deal. Second, it makes the engine harder to work on for novices. I bet some people who can do a tuneup themselves have been convinced not to do so, since that "complicated" cover is there. I think the 2001 Anniversary and I30 have even larger engine covers. If you look at Lexus LS430, Mercedes S-class, and Infiniti Q45, there is a cover on everything, making underhood maintenance a real chore.

is that the maxima?? does it come standard with a cai system?/ because look to the right of the picture, the air box is pushed all they way into the fenders.. and what's that actuator thing by the intake manifold? or are those just the coils?

engine covers are stupid...

pretty sure that's not the Maxima... first clue: the image is called Altima.jpg.

Also, from what I can see, the air intake looks just like my 4th gen intake, in front of the fender.

A couple of comments:

1) That's a huge intake manifold. Looks like the Cobra Mustang one in a way.

2) See that vacuum thingie on the pass side of the manifold. Looks like a dual stage intake to me.

3) Take a look a the cam covers. Looks like something is attached to each intake cam. Did Nissan reintroduce varible intake cam timing?? Looks like it to me.

I guess a good answer to your question is to take it to your dealer. You probably can even get to the fuel filter either without melting your arm to get back there.

It's pretty clear to me that all the 3.5VQs will be using a variable runner intake and possibly some kind of variable valve timing.

BTW, HEAT SOAK is back Maxima guys. Do you notice the cast intake manifold? That plastic manifold was short lived wasn't it?

Dave did you check my post? Alot of the VE30de engine cues are on the new VQ3.5(or so it looks like) That's how I noticed the timing cover buldges. Your right about the alumnin manifold. But I thought heat soak would be less w/ a phenolic(plastic) manifold. It was actually worse?

I still can't believe they are re-using the VTC addage.....wasn't 3 years of shear ticking hell from the VE30DE enough? Couldn't Nissan have come up with a better acronym?

At least Jeff will have a secure job in the future repairing them.....

Ooops, smiley:

Well either way I can feel myself shifting into sixth gear oh yeah baby. Hmm can we say mustang beater stock!!! So who can estimate a six speed price. Since the current maxima goes for 30,000 right I assume add another 3,000 and you can get a 6 speed maybe who knows

The system looks similiar to the VCIS (variable coustic induction system) i have on my 1mz-fe. Matter of fact the whole intake manifold looks similiar. What kind of horsepower is that engine putting out?

I think the main purpose of the cover is just to hide all the vacumm parts and clean the engine bay up. Less wires you see, the better it looks in their eyes. I hate when an engine is all covers. One of the first things i immediatly would remove

Na, I'm saying heat soak is going to be a problem again. The plastic intake manifold would hardly get warm. I don't know why they went back to the cast setup. It seems like a step backwards.
