Acetone-duct tape residue removal

It has worked on the windows, but when I used it on the plastic around the window, it lost its gloss. I used it on the paint on the inside of the fenders, and it made the clear coat soft or something like that. Is there a safe alternative for using it on the paint?

3M makes an adhesive remover that you can get at car paint suppliers and perhaps at hardward stores that won't harm your car yet takes off the adhesive.

I have used Goo Gone (or something similar) to take off some dealership stickers from the paint on the black Pathfinder I used to own. I coated the sticker, then used a razor to grab one little corner of each letter (took a while) and then pulled the rest off carefully by hand. I immediately waxed it afterward. I had the rig for 3-4 years and it still looked nice when I sold it.

acetone dissolves paint and plastic. not a smart thing to use for a cleaner.
