Help! Rear brake caliper noise

On my 99 SE, I am getting this really annoying clanking noise coming from the passenger rear wheel. I checked things out, and the pads on that side are actually moving around when I hit bumps, causing this noise. Now, I tried a different pad, same noise. Greased the slides, same noise. If I hold the ebrake a few notches, it goes away. It almost seems like the caliper isnt putting any tension at all on the brakes until they are pressed. They should have some tension/drag on them.

Does this sound like a bad caliper? E-brake cable? I'm sure I can adjust the ebrake cable to get the noise to go away, but then the left side will be applied more, and they will drag. Any suggestions?

I'm not sure wat u mean by greasing the slides, but I would make sure the caliper bracket pins aren't stuck. try greasing the pins and make sure they slide back and forth.

Yes, I greased the pins (slides) I also bought a new nissan hardware kit, but the front and back shims on plus the anti rattle clip in the center of the caliper. I'm starting to think that it may be the caliper, not putting any tension on the pads at all

You could spray anti squeel spray on the backs of your pads, and not just a little, a least 2 layers. Worked for me.

I can't see how a brake pad can move enough to produce a "clanking" sound when you're moving. How much play have you got in you pads? Does the caliper have play in it? What have you wiggled to reproduce the "clank"?

Personally, I think the problems something else

I'm having the same problem. It looks like this problem occurs only on 99's when the rear pads are changed.

They really can, you wouldn't believe how bad they can rattle.

I had this problem in a Grand Cherokee, it sounded so bad the dealer replaced a wheel bearing and still clicking and clanking countinued. Finally I replaced the pads and noises gone!

I had my left rear pad make a hummmmmm sound on left turns because I forgot to add the shims and I couldn't find them so I just ended up spraying anti squeel on em and all quiet now!

Sounds like a bad caliper to me, the pads do float but to only an extent. Once when I did rear pads, I suspected something wasn't right and jacked up the rear, pulled the e brake, and the wheel spun freely. Pulled the wheel, and saw the caliper was not pushing the pads against the rotor. Piston stuck in a compressed position....

Ahh. If you just changed the pads and pushed the pistons back into the cylinders then there could be a lot of play in the pads until they adjust back out. Try pumping the brakes for 5 mins and see if they close up.

Now you mention it I seem to remember this problem when I changed my rear pads.

Oh yeah they definately can. I can actually take the wheel off, and move the pad with my hand, reproducing the sound

The funny thing is, I can apply the ebrake, and it will work fine, tighten up the caliper enough to stop the wheel from moving. I know there should be some drag, but there isnt any at all.

I really want to try adjusting the parking brake cable, which I am positive I would get it tight enough to take the slack out, but then I am afraid if I do that, the left one will be too tight and lock up the wheel.

Whats crazy is, I bought a set of OEM pads, threw them on, and it still did it. I used the brake quiet on the old pads, and that didnt cure it. This clanking is driving me nuts! Thank god I am picking up my 04 6 speed tomorrow

its driving me crazy too. I've been to a few mechanics and they all blame it on the drilled & slotted rotors and the "aggressive" Axiis pads. :

Are you having a clunking or dragging sound when making turns at a low speed?

I put that anti-squeal stuff and it didnt cure it. I'm guessing I need the rear brake kit w/shims from Nissan

I do have this dragging/clunking sound but its not as common as the rattle. I'm going to play with the adjustment tomorrow. I will let you know how it turns out!
