The O2 sensors cannot affect the start. Something else is going on. It was good one day and hard starting the next? When it starts does it have the normal elevated idle speed which slowly decreases or does the idle droop down really low? Anything done to the car recently?

my mechanic diagnosed it as a possible o2 sensor problem, he doesnt have the correct software for my car so i took it to autozone and they said it was a "lean" code and to try a lower octane gas...I tried that and still same problem...when I start in the morning the rpms drop really low almost to the point of a stall (and it has) so both my mechanic and the guy at autozone both said its possible it could be the o2 sensor...its defiantely not an air leak because he smoked all the lines to check and everything is sealed tight.

Did this just occur like overnight or was it progressive? Does it happen on every start or just "cold" starts? When it's warmed up is the idle still not right? Was ANY work done on the engine before this occured? How does it drive otherwise? You could pull the flex duct off the TB and check if there is a lot of carbon/skunge around the throttle plate etc.

doesnt sound right.

did u have a code or not?! if not (or if autozone cleared it) wait for the code to show up again and get the number and do your research on the forums... they have a list of all codes and probable causes on the Maxima...

so wait for the new code and then get the code NUMBER so you can solve the problem urself. Dont let them clear the code without showing it to you.

Be aware that with your problem, an O2 sensor code may be a red herring, but as Bborges said, don't let them clear the code(s) without them stating exactly what they are. Did anybody check for the TB being gummed up? If the TB in the area of the throttle and IACV gets gummed up badly enough it can affect cold starts, the idle and other performance issues. When the car is warmed up, is the idle stable and at about 750rpm?

Maybe I am a retard but if you were running lean what would the octane gas do?

MAF sensor ...have you replaced it yet? If not that should take care of the hard start which is also making your car run lean by not regulating the oxygen intake. my guess is the codes he pulled were a P0171 or P0174 classic MAF..Call Dave B order it up
