04 350z head fitment....

Okay, I maybe able to get my hands on a set of 04 350z heads with head work done for a decent price. I just wanted to verified that it'll fit fine on my 02 3.5. This may be a dumb question but its late and I can't seem to think straight, I think it will work since its not from the revup motor which are 05+. Correct me if I'm wrong. Thanx

They should bolt right up. Put some ARP head studs while you are doing it.

Yes they'll fit fine.

BTW, you should get a 350Z head gasket. They have 3 layers as opposed to 2 in the FWD VQ's.

I'll be getting the HKS HG over the Cometic, its a better design.

How about some JWT valvesprings in your heads? I have those springs in my swap, couldn't feel the results, but psych's differently driving at high bands.

If I do get this head, it already has the following:
04 heads with jwt springs, valves, retainers, and shims. Pocket ported, decked and 5 angle valve job.

Well here is what the plan is for the moment:
Arias 8.5:1 Forged Pistons (oversized 96mm)
Eagle Rods (havent decided on stock or nismo rod bearings)
Bottom end will be balanced with at least the pulley if not with the flywheel also
ARP: Rod/Main/Head bolt
HKS Head gasket
JWT C2 Cams with JWT springs/shim and cam spacer
REVup Oil pump
PF TB and adapter
Some minor head work (3 angle valve job and mild p&p) if I don't get the head.
Modified IM (SSIM style)
J&S (already have)with EU
Tranny work

I know there are better pistons out there and probably better things but I just want to get a decent build(engine) and not spend more than 5k which from my calculations is about how much this is gonna cost me.

If you guys have any suggestions, please feel free to share. Its gonna be a winter project and I dont plan to have it running til at least March but I figure if I'm gonna do it, I may as well take my time and go easy on the wallet

I wouldn't bother with the JWT valvetrain.

Check these out

http://www.z1auto.com/prodmore.asp?m...ne&prodid=1718

These will work with either VQ30 or VQ35 heads. Double valve springs FTW. Fearra and NISMO also makes a kit but theirs cost more.

Also I dont think its possible to do a 5 way valve job on VQ35 heads, Cosworth sells reworked VQ35 heads and they could only do a 4 angle intake and 3 angle exhaust.

Thanx. I'll look into that. Do you think the stock retainer will work with dual valve spring? Would I still need the shims to work with the JWT C2 cams (especially when they are required)? $520 might be out of my budget but the springs look promising.

The Nismo ones aren't bad either at $279.

J&S is a safeguard for boosted motors. It retards timing when detonation occurs. It does some other things but i can't remember. Jcy98maxse was telling me about it but i forgot.

Edited for correction. Its not for just boosted cars, its for any car that pushes its engine to its limits. Its basically a knock monitor, it can either retard timing per cylinder or all cylinders. Its a engine saver and should be used for anyone pushing hard on their car (IHMO). more info found here:

That quirky 540 DBW system doesn't help either, i'm sure.

The stock retainers will not work with these double coil springs. You would have to buy their springs, retainers, and seats for it to work IIRC. The retainers are Ti so that's a plus. Also keep in mind this valvetrain is good for over 8K RPM so it maybe overkill for your application. IIRC the Ferrera kit which is similar to this kit is rumored to go past 10K RPM.

You would have to reshim, even if you were not doing a valvetrain build up you should still check & adjust the valvetrain regardless of what cams you run.

Edit: im confused, are you going 3.5 or not? or maybe just 3.5 internals in a 3.0?

sorry for the confusion. I'm doing a full 3.5 swap with 3.0 timing equipment with my boost setup.

I believe the 04+ maxima heads are the same part# as the 350z heads. The cams are different of course.

Good, there's a few little things I still need to fix. I need to reregister my car and pass emissions. I need to hook up the EGR, EVAP, and a rpm switch for the VI. Without the rpm switch, it runs like a MF from 4500-6000rpm but is a little tame below 4500rpm.

The thing even breaks loose the tires going into 3rd gear.

I need to get some damn time to work on these little things. Right now, I borrow the license plate from my beater 95 maxima with 200k miles when I want to take it for a drive.

motor swap is the way to play. Unless you get a supercharger, but thats not to my liking. I'm planning on doing the 3.5 swap in my 2k hopefully by next summer. You can do port n polish if you want....
