yo what do you fellas really think about Nissan?
Are they a really good car mfg. or bang for the buck? Me? I thought the Maxima would be more refined than it is. When I took delivery of my 1998 I was in heaven, it may as well been a 528i as far as I was concerned. But I soon became very disappointed in the way the car was built.
As I reflect upon 48,000 miles of driving, the car has been economical to operate (except depreciation). Once I found a decent dealership, all the warranty work has been performed with a smile. Annoying, sure, but at least no arguments, just free repairs. I just had another today performed under the powertrain warranty.
I think I will move on to more costly and European, but I do hope the 2003 will somehow regain the glory that the 4th gen had in late '94.

For the price, performance, and dependability that they are known for you can't you ask for more. My only complain is that it has some rattles, but besides that I am content with having what maybe the best six cylinder engine around. I don't know about you but alot of Maxima owners are repeat buyers and are loyal Nissan fans because of their past experiences with these vehicles. Remember that Nissan is under new managment and are coming out with products that will embarrasse some European Co's. Sure go ahead and get a bmw or an audi and you will see why Maximas are so popular. And why we have alot of members on the org. European cars have great designs and good performance. From what I can remember Cadillac beat mercedes in dependability. Go figure! Even American cars are out smarting them. Gook Luck with your solid car!!!!!
In terms of overall quality, I would peg my Maxima as a notch below Accord and Camry. Far too many rattles and the car doesn't feel as refined as a Camry (although it is light years ahead of a say, a Ford Taurus). As far as performance, I am satisfied with it. It has been reliable up the point that every major breakdown was covered by warranty (alternator, OPS, blower motor).
Alot of people on the Max.org have alot of problems because of their modifications to the cars. Everybody complains about this and that going out. Has anybody thought for a minute and realized what mods can do for a car. I push my cars hard and they are stock and I never seem to have a problem with them. I get the regular problems like wear and tear. I'm not referring to you Eric L., but I read alot of posts that consists of high performance alterations and I know most of these people that do the work themselves are not pros. As you may now by now my next car will be a NISSAN!!
Our family has Acura Legend, Lexus GS300. We basically have every brand of Japanese cars except Infiniti, but because the Maxima was so cheap, we bought a Maxima SE. BTW, it has LSD standard.
We also have Integra and the TL-S in the drive way!
But I only have the keys to the Legend and Maxima.

The new CEO of Nissan made a decree that all Nissan vehicles would have the highest HP Output in each of thier respective classes. That kind of emphasis on performance is exactly why I bought my Max, and is what will keep me a customer. Nissan's might not be as refined in some cases, but they are more fun and powerful than the competition in nearly any case. (Comparable classes, of course.)
Value
I bought my '95 used. Thanks to Nissans current value depreciation I ended up with a great car for little money.
I test drove a Camry 2yrs newer than the Max an with 50K miles less before driving the Max, and there was no comparison anong the 2. The Max felt more comfortable, potent and agile. And yes the Camry was a V6.
I'ts been almost 2 years now and I'm still very happy. No rattles or problems of any sort.
I don't know what I'll own next. It's all a matter of meeting my needs. But I'll deffently consider Nissan.

the thing about Nissan
I had owned many Toyota. In the early years they were innovative and had good performance compared to their counterparts. However, Honda, Acura, Nissan, and domestics had caught up. Reliability wise they were great, but performance were not impressive.
I always liked the 300Z, 200SX, and Maxima, and when I was a kid I liked the Maxima. I have a 99 SE and I enjoy it. Reliable, fun to drive, price right etc. The engine is very good, the transmission is decent, unlike the 'knife thru butter' feel of the Honda/Acura. The BODY is the downside. Nissan of late have not put out good looking cars.
Passat, Jetta, A4 all look fluid and are eye-catching. Sentra, Altima, Pathfinder, Maxima do not turn heads.
I do hope they start bring some heavy hitters, and better looking cars to NA. Am anxious to see how the new Altima and 2002 Maxima perform. My lease is up and unless the Camry comes out drastically impressive, or the Acura dealership can swing me a great deal, chances are I will go with the Max or Altima. European cars with similar performace level cost much more, and domestics like the Grand Prix are not good for resale, and are rather common IMO.

I love Nissan because I have heard of how long they run and the reliability.I am at 206,000+ miles on mine and it still purs*KNOCK ON WOOD*Plus there are too many Toyota's,Honda's out there.I like to be original and I just happened to pick Nissan's because they are just as good as any other car and they look good handle good run long...I can go on and but bottom line is I will always own a Nissan as long as I live and I will never drive another import except for a Eclipse GSX but that is it.
roll on forever

I drove a 99 Accord V6 coupe when I was car shopping. That compared to my 97 Max is incredibly different. The Max seemed better at just about everything. I know that if and when I get another car it will be another Max. I've gotta get an AE!
