Long term users: have your struts and shocks lost their feel?

When I installed KYB GR-2's on my 3rd Gen Max, they felt great. Fort the first 6 months, that is, then they started getting soft -- most noticeably in turns.

In retrospect, I have been told that GR-2's are "crappy."

But, on hearing that, I wondered if the same lack of durability exists on the AGX's, too.

Anyone have any long-term experience with them (like 6-months or longer)(?

I had NEW GR2s on 5th gen Progress springs for about a year and a half. I can confirm what you experienced. They were awesome for about 6 months then slowly started to get softer. By the end of the 1.5 yrs with them, they werent anywhere close to stock strut softness, but not as stiff as new either. Keep in mind tho I had them paired up to 5th gen Progress springs, which although fit just fine, have a stronger spring rate than the 4th gen equivalent. So Im sure that in my case that had something to do with it.

Now I have USED AGX/Sprints. This setup was taken off the previous car and it was on there for AT LEAST 3-4 yrs. The struts arent as "smooth" as new struts, but they still work great.

Hope that helps

both the kyb gr2 and the tokico blue shocks are meant as slightly stiffer stock replacements and cannot hold up to lowering springs very well. id suggest konis, kyb agx, or tokico illumnas with lowered suspensions

What do you suggest for a 3rd gen since they dont seem to make the AGXs or Illuminas for us. I'm going to lower my car and I want a stiffer strut to go with my eibachs but dont want somthing thats only gonna last 6 months

wow.. dug up a 4 yr old thread to ask that? But hey, at least it's a relevant post!

I'd recommend Tokicos. They're better than the GR-2, but the Konis beat them. unfortunately Konis are supposedly NLA, so Tokico are your best bet.

I have Tokico's and love them! My mechanic mentioned that he'd heard they fail quickly but they do have a lifetime warranty so I think I'll be okay.
Haven't had them long enough to comment on reliability but going from stock with shot rear struts to Tokico Illuminas and Eibach springs all around was a drastic and welcome change!

PS - I don't get where everybody says how stiff the Eibach's are...?

How long are Illuminas or the Koni Yellows designed to last for?
