get an automajik? Been here this long and it still baffles me that his car is a slushbox. Was it because you wanted the challenge of having the baddest automatic or are were you unable to find the 5 speed when you bought your car?

Probably because he lives in North Cali and commutes a long ways in rush hour. That is the only reason why I have one....

some people just get sick of it, i heard a lot of teenagers(16+) get the stick on their first car but then when they are like 23 for example they buy a new one but an auto one. Some people like it and some don't. Auto makes the ride more mindlessly, you don't have to do anything execpt put in drive and move the streeing wheel.

It's all a choice and there is only one person you have to please, your wife.. er yourself!

(I can't beleive I am starting yet another auto-manual flame war!)

Ditto. When you get older and get hitched, some of the appeal of driving a 5-speed in stop-and-go traffic goes right out the door.

Hmmm

isn't it I'd rather Rule in Hell than Live in Heaven.. .Devil's Advocate?
Yeah Sticks suck in rush hour. But, too many canyon roads in the mountains not to have a stick out here.

Yeah, there's no comparison driving an auto in rush hour traffic, but if there's a 1/4 mile opening in the traffic then you can easily blast yourself up to 60+MPH (at least in Dallas traffic) with a 5 speed: instant gratificationand no lag whatsoever.

This is the way I keep myself happy, instead of being frustrated, with morning rush hour.

i live in NYC, no one in my family can drive stick cept for me, my dad does a little but stalls 3 of 5 times. anyway yeah traffic sucks, last time i was stuck in LI, when i got home my left leg was killing me. but my max acts as a short distant transporter, unless i descide on taking it for a trip but if my family ever wanted to go somewhere, my dad would take his van, big, comfy, and automagic they should make a manu-agic. one switch and a 5spd becomes a slushy... vice versa

I think it's cause Kevin is 73. He's too fragile to shift the tranny.

Yeah, just like Honda drivers! (OOOOOhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!)
95% of hondas that are modifed (excluding accords) are 5speeds!!!

Remember, I'm a honda driver too.... not a fanatic of Hondas...

Why is it that every guy with a 5spd thinks there car is so bad. I've been here on this website for about a month and all I hear is my 5spd is so fast, it would kill an automatic with ease. Well I'm sorry but bullcrap, a 5spd is not going to smoke an auto. Now given the right driver a 5spd can beat an automatic but, not by very much. Now I had the opportunity to drive a 5spd and I was not to impressed. Now given it was fast but, it wasn't blistering fast, I didn't feel this sudden urge to trade, in fact after driving the 5spd I was actually happy I had bought an automatic. Anyways just my 2cents. Thanks for reading and happy tuning. 5spd

The 5 speed manuals are easily a half second faster in the 1/4 mile. That's fairly significant. The 5 speed is more fun to drive in certain situations. The automatics can move too, but the 5 speed guys will never admit that. There are some days I with I had a 5 speed, but most of the time I'm happy with my automatic in my heavily congested area.

Hmmmmm..... interesting thread. UMD_MaxSE basically sumed it up in his first post. I don't want to drive up and down the SF hills...... and I commute in Bay Area traffic, so a stick is not a wise choice (for now).

Wait until I blow my tranny, then I'll be looking into a 6 speed swap.

BTW... my Columbian midget has arrived.

I was checking out the Level 10 site today. If I blow up my tranny, I'm checking that out.

http://www.levelten.com

Check out the magazine articles they have online. There's a good one on the torque converter and shift kit for the Lightning. A lot of good technical info.

i like the control a 5 speed offers. automatics i find mindless/boring - at worst, frustrating.

Me too, and we're in the same heavily congested area, I believe

I love a 5-spd just as much as the next guy, but for a daily-driver car in heavily congested areas, or if you just drive TONS it just sucks and I'm glad I have an auto.

My gf/stb-fiance and I someday want to get a cool little weekend roadster (Z3, S2000, TT, who knows, maybe the new Z!) and that sucker WILL BE STICK DAMMIT!!!
