Fuel gauge not working when cold?

Hi All,

I searched for this, and only found some results from the 3rd gen guys. Basically what is happening is I will turn on my car (03 SE), and it will either peg my fuel gauge at FULL or EMPTY and I mean allll the way to the top or allll the way to the bottom. This is with a tank that is about 3/4 full.

After the car warms up, if I restart the car, it will then go to its proper spot and work correctly.

Is this a normal issue where the cold temperatures (about 28 degrees F) affect the fuel gauge?

I installed a subwoofer recently and ::may:: have bumped into a wire or something, but then I don't think that once the car warms up it would all of a sudden start working upon re-start. So I doubt that is related, I think this is a weather issue.

Just wondering if anybody else has had this problem, and if so - how did you fix it?

Thanks
~Andrew

My gauge on my 01 drops to the bottom when the car is off. As soon as you turn the key to the on position, you should get an accurate reading on your gas gauge.

The past couple of morning have been cold (im on Long Island) and I havent noticed any of the symptoms your are saying. If this started just after you installed the sub, I would think it was something you did there.

typically I would have thought it would have been something to do with installing the sub as well - but the electronics are from two completely different systems, with the only common factor being the battery (since I ran a separate power wire for the amp).

My other indication is that it is not related to the sub is that it is fine after the car warms up (assuming I restart the car).

Maybe somebody with more expertise regarding the electrical system can confirm my assumptions?

As an FYI, when installing the sub, I installed a line level converter (matched it up with the rear speakers) and for the remote power I used the wire that is powered on when the ignition is on. All wireing was done directly behind the stock headunit.

My guess is that there is some resistor or something that may be having trouble, or maybe there is a sensor that has gone bad?

I was just reading some other threads and it turns out it may have messed something up from unplugging and plugging the battery back in (maybe I zapped something?!) any suggestions on how to debug?

^ I've had a similar experience and find unplugging the battery definitely SHOULD NOT cause any problems... That's like having to replace the engine because you changed the oil.

I have some sort of issue with my 03 maxima as well. I was on a drive out of town, and the suddenly shut off, I tried to start the car again, it started and shut off again, it happened few times, but I could not be able to move the car. I checked the fuel, the fuel gauge was showing there was still 1/4 tank of gas. Though I had to tow the car to mechanic, and found out I was out of gas but the gauge was still showing 1/4 tank full of gas.
I was told something wrong with the fuel sending unit, have to replace the whole, around $700. Though I came across one person selling the complete sending unit. I bought that one, I got it installed, but the problem persists. I got in touch the person I bought the sending unit from he told me that it was working when he sent me that. He told me to take the sending unit out, and try to move the float up and down and see how the cluster and look at the fuel gauge, and I was really amazed when I did that the fuel gauge was working fine. I installed the sending unit back into the tank.
But
I still have the same issue, the gauge move/functions fine, and as soon as it comes near to the 1/4 level, it doesn't come down to show me the accurate amount of gas in the tank, so I have to keep the tank nearly full all the time to avoid break down.
so the question is, has anyone come across this issue, what one has done to correct it. any advice for me, so that I can get it done at reasonable budget!!!

my suggestion would be to remove the fuel pump and check the condition of the float and wiring...

Silly question, but could the magnetic field of the sub cause an issue if close enough?
