Timing: Distributor 12mm bolt not tighening

So I got my timing adjust finally, which seems to have been the problem from the BEGINNING which made my car lag and idle like crap. I got it tuned to spec and actually went to 17 degrees and boy does it feel nice.

WELL, I was on the highway going to a buddies house when I get off and I'm on the ramp, it just turns off and wasnt staying on so I took a look and the distributor was all shifted to one side and loose. I went ahead and tried guesstimating and tightening it until I could get ahold of a timing light once again but it was wasnt holding.

BOTTOM LINE/ CLIFFNOTES
12mm bolt on distributor not holding therefore not allowing to set timing. What can I do to fix it? Are there any other solutions that dont include re-tapping?

lol...dude are you serious? Go get a bolt ASAP and adjust yo sh*t son!

8X1.25 should be about 30mm-40mm long.

Now back to my problem!

i see your options as seeing if theres a little bit bigger bolt that would fit in there where you could tap it to that size and use that. if it was mine, i would probably tap and helicoil it and never give it a second thought.

I actually am using a slightly thicker bolt...I had a few spare ones from when I upgraded to leather seats, I used one of those 14mm bolts. Problem is that its loose one again is there a way i can like use a nut on one side and bolt on other?

lol damn sillies...well I got the hole re-tapped and a bigger bolt. Also stole my g/fs distributor and put it on my car since mine got messed up by "ahem" touching and messin with the little disc inside...anyway I got the timing set to | | | .| | | where the . is and that would be toward the front of the car...is that ok?

Car idles super smooth, accelerates SUPER smooth and you can feel the power push your head back unlike before

each mark should be 5 degrees. i say that it looks like youve got it at 13. spec is 15 i believe and some set it more towards 17. so set it on the third mark from the left when you're looking down on it.

_

_

_

-_

_

the bottom being the closest to the front end. Thought that would've been 17 which is what I was aiming for..

There ya go, I guess you were right. I only saw 6 markings but I guess according to the FSM its 7 well, if it feels awesome on 13 then my car must've REALLY been off lol I'll set it to 17 which would feel even BETTER!

I'll do it when I buy my OEM Cap, Rotor, and Sparkplugs at leDealer.

So just a bigger tap worked instead of a helicoil? I guess that would end up being easier....I'm gonna have to check that out sometime. What happened to the GF's car now that you took her distributor???

BTW....I'll probably end up doing the CV boot sometime next week....since the holidays are eating up all my time.

Are pics posted of the meet @ Gino's East?

Dude, I've called you these past 2 days to see if you wanted to do the axle..some of the pics are uploaded but not all.

As for the g/fs car, its not really in driving condition anyway as her brake pedal sinks all the way down and one injector in bad. I'll get her a JY distributor eventually along with injectors. She rides my car mainly and I have to take her and pick her up where ever she goes so she knows my car deserves her dist more than her car.

Hey I might go to a party/drinkin party on Saturday in case you wanna go, I can check with my friend

back to topic, yes everything is swell now. Couldnt wait for cap, rotor, and plugs so I just adjusted timing to 17 degrees and its mighty sexy.

Hey Gun5, Just get the necessary bolt from an autopart store or hardware store, its a 8x1.25 and I think 30-40mm but to be on safe side just get one from dealer or junk yard so you get exact one. You'll need a timing light ($40 at part store) Once you have the timing light just hook it up to the battery and to sparkplug wire #1, turn your car on make sure nothing is running (radio, lights..no load at all) and put your car on Neutral but be sure to pull your handbrake so it doesnt roll.

Ok, fun part. Put the bolt in where it belongs and tighten it until it's firm but you still can move distributor with a little bit of force, ok aim at the biggest pulley that has a V shaped arrow pointing at it and if you focus you'll see the little 7 marking everytime the timing light flashes. All you have to do now it tilt the distributor side to side until the 4th mark (15 degrees) is aligned with the V, tilt it a little more if you want to advance it slightly to 17 degrees but I wouldn't do more as I've heard it'll make your engine ping. Once you've decided where you want it just tighten the bolt fully but dont OVERtighten as thats what messed mine up in the first place. once its tight, double check with the timing light that its still on the mark you chose. Verify your idle as well, make sure you do it on P, R, and D so you know its good. Here comes the best part, driving!!! Get back to us and let us know how it went.

Here ya go, since you were complaining bout not being able to see pic.

lol that sucks.. just try to base yourself off the middle-ish marks and your car should sound nice and consistent. your idle between 700-800rpms with no load on and it should rev up nice and smooth
