MA inspection failed for no spoiler?????

ok so today i had my car inspected finally. and i failed because the guy said i need to put a spoiler back on because it has a 3rd brake light on it. this is the FIRST ive ever heard of cars NEEDING a 3rd brake light. and wtf do i do cause i can not put a spoiler on for a couple reasons. one being that my old one snapped off last winter and i dont have money to buy a new one. two being because i cut the wire that was hanging outa my trunk and plugged the holes. three being that i filled my trunk with great stuff insolation to help stop the trunk from rattling from my subwoofers.

how the hell do i fix this? do you think if i got a trunk with a spoiler froma junkyard it would come with those wires that go up to the 3rd brake light?? or is it possible to add a 3rd brake light inside the car like non-SE model max's?? and would that even pass if i did that??? wtf is this bull****.

Technically anything 1994+ is required to have a 3rd brake light IIRC. You could wire up some POS on the rear deck just for inspections. Then take it down afterwards.

Agreed with post #2. So glad here in FL you need no state inspections....when I lived in RI it was a nightmare trying to pass with all the crap they check.

you'll get a ticket if you dont have a 3rd brake light either.

so if i were you, i'd leave it up for after inspections too.

Yep, I got a ticket for that before on my Integ...I put my stock back on, signed off, paid 10 bucks, and put my Type R wing back on =)

Just go wire up a red light bulb or something or find a 3rd brake light from some junk card.

Federally, all vehicles are supposed to have a CHMSL. However, the STATE determines what's allowed at inspections. I drove for TWO years with my spoiler LED NOT working and had NO issues. Then I get the car inspected and I fail because it didn't work. Just do what Dubbya said, but leave it in. YOu can find out what's legal or not legal by checking your state's DMV website. It's all public record. For instance, in NC, the CHMSL is a MUST HAVE, but REVERSE lights are not. Good thing, because my reverse lights don't work either.

Get the rear deck and third brake light off someone parting out their car and just extend the wire that was supossed to go to the light on your spoiler up to the rear deck?

Just based on your handle, I could interpret that in a couple different ways, but I won't go there....
Backing up in the dark can be a bit problematic at times, but even if they WERE working, the illumination provided is minimal. It's more a warning system to others than to actually help the driver.

I had that problem too. I just tapped the brake wire to on of the rear lights and wired up and LED bar I got from Future Shop. Showed the cops at the station and took it out in the parking lot as soon as they signed off on it.

I agree with post 2. Just get a little 6 inch bar and wire it to the brake or something then take it down. it wont cost u that much.

Or you could get real *crunk* and get "Maxima" in LED's and when u step on your brakes "Maxima" Blinks red and green just for the holiday seasons.

yea i got a little 3inch light today, had to solder on a ground wire cause it was ment to be a clearance light (so the ground was the screw holding it on the body), probably going to try to wire it up tomorow if it isnt raining again. im gunna have to make some kind of bracket to hold it somehow....

i hooked the light up today and it looks pretty good. i opted to mount the light down low on the rear deck rather than up top because uptop would have been so much harder. i mounted the light on a piece of wood, then drilled 2 holes through the wood and rear deck of the car and ran the power and ground wires down into the trunk and up the trunk arm to the old rear brake light wires from the spoiler. then i got some tan felt and covered it a little bit to make it look better. i used velcro on the bottom to stick to the carpet on the rear deck. nothing too special, but it works for me. here are a couple pics:

felt looks a little loose in that picture but its not. its because of the wires under it.

but it deffinatly looks good from outside the car!
