Okay hello, another request by AdamK hehehe. I wanna purchase subs and if I have to an amp. I really don't have the money and shouldn't be doing it in the first place, but I really wanna lol. I talked with this dude who said I don't need an amp if i wanted to get subs added to my current NISSAN Stock Radio *NOT BOSE* is this true? If so or if not so what would you guys reccomend I buy with my 300.00 limit I was thinking maybe 2 10's, 12's, or 1 single 15". And if I do need a AMP which would you guys reccomend, and please bear with my 300.00 price limit hehehe, any other way of saving money? Thanks in advance.

I bought an Amp(just for the sub) & 12' Sub for my non-Bose radio w/ Bass blockers going to the factory speakers and it sounds pretty decent but maybe a little too much bass. Too much power going to the Sub seems to overshadow the factory speakers too much. Check my signature for details. It ran me about $650 installed for It. If i had to do it all over again, I probably would have just got a Bazooka tube w/ built in amp. That should be around the $300 price your looking at OR go all out and buy a nice 4 channel amp powering the 4 new speakers along with the powered Bazooka but then your talking $1200 for something nice, IMO.

OK here it goes, I have a non bose in my max as well and just did the same thing. I found that the stock head unit a clarion. will not drive any kind of sub. A amp is needed. I put in a 8" JL audio. into a custom box and had the whole thing mounted in the existing sub cutout in the rear deck. Made a cover. it looks like the bose system, and it thumps.

These are the things I found out, mounting the sub in the rear deck required dynomatting(A must) it made a world of difference. you will definitely need an amp. get a amp with remote adj. gain and frequence. I found that the head unit is really horrible at even attempting to control the sub. the more controls you have directly to the amp the happier you will be. Trust me

Run a sub off the radio!! HA HA, that's the funiest thing I've ever heard! You will blow your poor little radio's amp. Seriously, don't waste your time with bazooka tubes or cheap equipment like pyle, pioneer, sony, apline subs. Save your money, and get good stuff - ie rockford, JL. And amp wise stick to something decent, you don't need any flashy features for a sub amp, just bass boost and a continuously variable cross over. If you are not going to replace and amp your inside speakers you'll only want about 200watts RMS on a single 10 or 12. I ahve some old stuff to sell if you are interested.

check out crutchfield. occasionally they have big discounts listed online. i bought a 10" mtx sub ($60) and an mtx amp ($100) both for less than half of retail cuz both models were being replaced by 2k1 stuff. the sub'll handle 250 rms, amp puts out 280 rms. limiting factor is rear deck rattling. (need dynomat)
at those prices you'll have enough left over for a decent enclosure.

Well as far as installation goes...Could a shmuck like me put it in or no? Any online tutorials you guys know of? Would it be better for me to mount it in the trunk or could I mount it where the BOSE woofer goes? If I had someone put it in about how much would I be looking at?

Get a JL Audio Powerwedge. This is a sub and box sold together that are both manufactured by JL Audio. Get the one that contains a single 10-w0 subwoofer. This will cost around $180. Use the remaining money to get an amp that can give it 150watts RMS. Use a speaker-to-line level converter off your existing rear speakers to get a signal to the amp. Put bass blockers on all of your stock speakers at about 100Hz. You will be very happy with this setup...I was. Unfortunately, loud bass can be addictive, you'll soon want more.

Yes, you can install all of this yourself, it's really not that hard. There is lots of good info all over the net about installing.

Bass blockers are acatualy tiny capacitors. They are installed in the "+" wire of a speaker. They act as a high-pass filter. This means they block out any frequencies below the specified freq. They are sold by their cutoff frequency. If you buy a 100Hz bass blocker, it wont let any freqs below 100hZ to that speaker.

The idea is that your 6.5 speakers arent all that good at playing low frequencies. If you block the lows, they can do a much better job of playing the highs. Then you add a subwoofer just to play the lows.

If you put 100Hz bass blockers on all your 6.5's and set the low-pass filter on your sub amp at 90Hz, you'll get pretty good sound. The reason you set them different like that has to do with cut off slopes of the filters and stuff, but that's a pretty long explanation...look it up.

Wanna swap out the ghetto bose

headunit, but is this realistically possible? Some shops tell me it is, but some say it's not. Whats the deal? I'm looking to retain the original speakers, but want something a little more special. Any idea's?

possibly. i dunno for sure. maybe if your upgrade is to another clarion unit, you could splice the wires out of the oem harness to the correct inputs on the new headunit (if it has those inputs) after you've identified which does what.
