Rear Disc Conversion (Pics Inside)
Rear Disc Conversion (Pics Inside)
FINALLY! Got the rear discs installed as of today.

Sourced the parts from oldvgnut, from these forums. He was very cooperative, and responded quickly. He got the parts shipped quick too. Everything was in great condition. The assembly was cleaner than MINE! I'm very happy with the way it came out, and although I keep hearing that the rear discs don't work for crap, I noticed a difference from the ye olde drums.

kick *** dude, I'm happy for ya. Hopefully I'm next on the conversion since I've addressed all major issues I wanted to take care of first. How easy was the conversionand how long did it take? and what was the ball park price for the parts..not the new pads or rotors but just the conversion parts alone.
It wasn't all that hard, if you have ALL the parts. It helps if they're in good condition too. I paid 125 for my parts, 75 of that was for shipping alone. These assemblies weigh like a ****. Box was a little under 90 pounds. If anything, we had the most trouble with the rear seat removal. My leather was cracked enough as it is, now it's 2x as bad.
That, and the parking brake was a little bit of trouble, since the catalytic is in the way. But other than that, it was just time consuming.

lol...I can probably get you a mint rear leather replacement if you need one let me know..
Yea those assemblies are freakin heavy, I found out when I changed my struts. So hey the struts from GXE and SE are the same whether disc or drum right?

The strut INSERTS are the same. The strut assemblies, however would have to be removed and replaced with a disc strut assembly. And unless you have that god awful ugly brown or burgundy looking color, then no thanks on the rear leather.
I can get that God awful browish burgundy hideous interior for you..you just need the back rest part right? or you want the whole rear seat?.....................unless you wanna convert your entire seats to a sexy new color, you can choose from nice tan, black, OR grey plush (which was my old interior for a great price )
yea as long as the inserts are the same I should be fine then..

Yea, basically I just need the rear part. After smacking the top of the seat, the seat cracked even more. The rear seats are in almost perfect condition, it's just the very top of the seat that's all messed up. I should take pictures tomorrow.

Nice work
I did this too a couple of months ago..And there IS a significant difference betwwen rear discs and drums. The drums suck!!
Also, as he ^ said the rear strut inserts are the same for all 3rd gens. Also, i think the strut housing is the same, its just the spindle thingy that the hub connects to that is different..I think..no sure though..but anyhow its easier to just change out the entire strut housing..

I just don't feel like taking apart my car to find out.
Hey Brian lets have a get together at the JY and find out.. I'll bring my tools and you just bring your *** there. The 3rd gen community would appreciate it and I would buy just what I need if it turns out that I dont need entire assembly.

I don't have that much time for this stuff anymore
I think I've still got the drum struts in the garage, I just need disc ones to compare them too.
Besides it's easier to do in my garage with air tools than at the JY with hand tools.

Whenever you want and are available (I'm unemployed so I'm always free)..yea I know its easier with airtools but I'm most likely gonna end up buying the parts anyway so it wont be a lost cause to use handtools, beside I'm the one doing the hard work, you'll be mah bish

IIRC, the reason for replacing the entire strut assembly is because you can't just take the bottom portion where the brakes are at off. I think they're welded to the strut assembly. If it weren't for that, my seats wouldn't have gotten worse.
