EGR or Knock sensor?

'97 SE w/auto ---- Getting code for EGR and Knock sensor.

Couple of questions:
(1) Does one affect the other?
(2) If the EGR is replaced will it reset the KS (or vice versa)?
(3) If I reset the codes, can the car pass emissions as long as the sensor doesn't retrip? (It can go about a day without re-lighting.)

Any help/answer is appreciated!

Fix the EGR problem, reset ecu and you should be good. Both my maxis had erg and ks codes. After I fixed the egr I was fine.
IF you have a good KS.

they are both bad. if you clean the EGR pipe and reset the computer the KS wont set off the CEL light but you will still have the poor mileage and lower power as the KS will still be shot. KS is money to fix. EGR is nothing but time to clean the pipe (assuming it is the 0302 flow code). i am sure if Jwax were to pull a code from his ECU the KS code would still pop up.

How to clean the "EGR pipe"?

Thanks for the reponses! Kinda what I thought about the knock sensor. Yup, the EGR is 0302 code. Is there a "how to" posted anywhere on how to clean the EGR pipe for dummies? I'd rather try that before spending $120 that I don't have for a new part.

No EGR sticky?

I was hopin' someone knew of a "secret link" to a do-it-yourself instruction site. Too much to ask for I guess.

Resetting the CEL will NOT allow passing the emission test!

I noticed last time I reset the CEL, it took about a day to re-trigger. Therefore I reset the computer this morning and headed to the emission testing center while the light was dark. Their computer thought that the Maxima computer had been reset by dead battery or something (of course I know what really happened). It knew the car was in "interupted mode" and was waiting to be reset by physically operating the car through a 'drive cycle'. I don't know if the cycle is determined by speed, duration, or clock time (or combination of all three), but the bottom line is that the car failed. Since I'm getting the EGR code, I need to clean the hose and/or replace the valve before trying again. Hopefully cleaning the hose will remedy the situation.

Several posters said they had instructions somewhere on how to do this, but sounds like the search is not too promising. Can anyone come up with information or a web link? Your efforts are appreciated.

Cleaning EGR parts

Thanks maranello for the ID. I'm learning as I go, so sorry about missing the sticky. Has anyone out there cleaned 14713 and solved an EGR code? Does the part stay installed for cleaning or does it have to be removed? Should it be cleaned by targeting with carb spray, or is it 'reamed'? I am uneducated on this issue, therefore the confusion.

no u take that part off.. grab a wire hanger and clean the **** out of it.... use a bunch of carb cleaner... also ur gonna have to replace the gaskets... meaning egr tube (2) and egr gasket (1)...get them from the dealer and DONT PAY MORE THAN $2.50 for each... also i would be wise to remove the egr as well and clean the it as well... good luck..

There are a few ways of removing the egr tube. Here's how I did mine.

again there is no need to cut any bolts. 5mm socket. 12mm socket. ratchet. a long flathead (for prying) and some vise grips (to take the temp sensor out of the small EGR pipe). All you need and should take you 45 min to get out at most. (for cleaning the small pipe anyhow).
