If you plan on using the shims i suggest checking the valve clearance before running the motor.

all day I've been researching trying to find out who's installed them, if there were clearance problems, anything. Would hate to install them only to find out it doesnt fit the way it should.

the shims are suppost to aid getting it to the proper height.

Like nismology, you will want to check the clearance on the valves wither way. A machine shop should be able to do the install and check the clearance if you didnt want to bother with it.
