1996- Rough and low idle when cold but good idle when it hits normal operating temp??

I have a problem with my 1996 I30. When the car is cold and I go to start the car up, the car has a rough idle. Idling very low and sometimes even dying. When it dies, I hold my foot on the gas and hold the rpms at like 1000 to 1500 rpms for about 1 min. After this the car no longer dies but idles rough and low. After the car gets to about normal operating temp. The car runs fine, good idle, and never dies.

What can the prob be to make it run rough on cold start?

The car has about 93k miles on the clock.

Thanks for any help!!!!!

Start by doing some easy maintenance. Clean the throttle body and IACV valve. If you still have a poor idle in the morning, check the ECT sensor for proper operation. If it's out of spec when it's cold, replace it.

you could also turn the TPS (or isd that the IACV) up a notch, get that idle up about 200 more RPMs

Why would you do that? that only masks whatever is messing up in the first place. Clean everything as you shouldnt have to adjust anything.

..actually jltibbs is correct! Obviously make sure all the normal maintenance is done.. but if that doesnt fix the problem, sometimes all that needs to be done is to hook it to the Nissan computer and adjust the IACV a tad higher. This is a common thing with Maximas and I30s alike for cold weather. Most aftermarket scanners probably wont have the capability of doing it, but the Nissan Consult scanner CAN and a good one like a Snap-On scanner MAY. Check it out, takes about 5 minutes!
