Why did you sell your 4th Gen?

I'm vaguely considering selling my 4th Gen. and just wanted to hear people's opinions/reasons for selling and moving onto something new. Maybe someone's story will ring true for me.

My friend has a Mazdaspeed6 and I feel like the 274hp and 6-speed manual transmission are calling me....

Thanks in advance!

FYI - I currently have a 1999 ES/SE Maxima, Sterling Mist, 5 speed with LSD, 110k miles, Eibach/Tokicos, Stillen front strut bar, Addco rear sway bar, Budget Y, Stillen intake, aftermarket stereo system, and some other minor additions. No sunroof or leather.

I haven't sold it yet but I'm putting it up for sale today. This will be my 4th time advertising it, I got cold feet twice and yanked the ad the third time I didn't like the looks of the interested party, plus he lived in my town and I didn't want to see the car being driven by someone else, especially his 16 yo daughter. (call me crazy) I was going to get a G35 with the 260+ hp but they are only high priced Maxima's. Then I discovered the M45, I have my eye on three right now a red one with tan interior, a black one with creme interor and a silver one with black interior. All I have to add is the satellite radio and a rear spoiler. Wish me luck.

I'm selling mine because I want another 240.. I sold the S13 w/RB to my friend and he's taking that over.

Sad really.. But it's a FWD family sedan and it was my quick daily driver. Now that the S13 beater is gone, it's time for another S14. All in all I'm trying to keep it, but I'll most likely trade or sell it.

I am considering getting an Impreza, perhaps this summer.
Reasons: I have a lot of miles (183xxx) and an automatic (I really want a stick). I also want better handling and more power (a bit of a problem in the impreza but nothing that a swap cant fix). Also more traction (I manage to spin even my brand new tires in the dry without pushing the gas all that hard) and ABS would be nice. + rallying

Test drive it. I test drove the Speed6, and while it had a some more of power, it is a much heavier car, lower mpg, with an ugly rear bumper and exhaust tips. It didn't have any extra jump over the max, and the numbers support that. Plus the reliability of the Speed6 is very much unknown, and I assure you that buying parts for it in a few years will be sheer torture like my RX-7 is. I left the Mazda dealer and haven't looked back. The Max isn't a flashy or rare car, it has no boost or AWD, but it's a good car.

Thanks for the advice. I have driven it, and like the AWD, but I think I'm also just in love the with idea of a newer car. At the same time, I don't really have any complaints on the Max, and am still enjoying the power and 28mpg (mostly highway), so maybe I'll hold off for awhile.

I agree that the rear bumper on the Speed is really unattractive....

Nope, its a really nice car that depreciates worse than anything else I've ever seen. 6K the second you drive it off the lot.. Nice!

You're right on the depreciation, though I have seen worse! last year I bought a 2004 with the 6-speed manual and 40K miles for $18,000. Somebody bought it brand new in 04 for over $30,000...

For me, G35 just wasn't worth it.
Had an opportunity to buy 2005 sedan with 37k for $22k. Went for a passat instead.

Hope your Passat is holding up well. I had one (the wife's 1998 Passat) for about a year and it was in the shop 3 times for warranty repairs. Needless to say, as soon as the warranty expired, I traded it in for a RX300. The Passat was a nice car, but the problems were pretty significant, and the car was always out of commission for days when that happened. Then, VW didn't have a loaner car program, so I got stuck with "free" cheap rental cars from their onsite no-name rental affiliate (a Kia Sephia once!!)...At least Infiniti and Lexus give you nice factory loaners for repair work. And the VW cost about as much as our Lexus and Infiniti when it came to repairs...I heard that the 2001+ VW's are more reliable though, but didn't want to take a chance on VW again. Other than that, nice looking cars, lots of features too.

If you're going to keep the car, then it's well worht it.. Otherwise, screw that. Looka t 240's they hardly depreciate at all (S14's that is and S13's hold value too). If I ever go back in time I'll make sure to get a '98 kouki and just let it sit there protected. Or a '93 S13 hatch..

We're constantly surrounded by newer and nicer cars that make us envious, no matter how expensive and nice your current car is. The grass is always greener on the other side. But the 4th gen Maxima is a classic. Its looks, reliability, and performance are still impressive (the clean design is better than 98% of newer cars, including most Nissans) and very few other cars can be modified so cheaply to so drastically improve the looks, handling, and performance.

The only thing I really dislike about the Max is that it's FWD. Hence I will only buy RWD manuals in the future. If you're bored with your 4th gen, don't buy a new car. Instead do some mods here and there, get a freaky new girlfriend, take up skydiving, and save your money. Cars are terrible investments. When the time comes for a change, buy a used Nissan/Infiniti...what a steal with their depreciation!

I agree with this. I test drive newer cars frequently and I still love getting in my Maxima. They are not amazing in any one aspect but they are very well rounded cars that give alot for the price they command.

They are great cars to buy and keep. I can't wait to pick up a 1st gen M45 when I'm an older bastid.

i just traded mine for a daily and some cash, i got me a clean civic thats painted top secret gold with black rims, its nice, but not as nice as a maxima. i had to do it tho cause of too many bills and my project truck, but it ran great and whatnot. but the good thing is i will see it again and now i have something new to 'work on'

Geo T, that's cold man, but actually I think the 97 is the best year in the fourth Gen, the SE of course. We don't have the key fob issues or the ignition coil problems which are common on the 98's and 99's. I'm still running on the original clutch & tranny at 146k miles. I only changed out the ks at 140k and this baby still manages 120+ mph runs 2 or 3 times a month. I know that with proper maintenance my car will last for at least another 100 or 150k miles. Honestly I really don't want to sell it but I know that if I do, one of you guys will take care of it just as well as I have.

The reason im gona say this thread is kinda pointless is because if i sold my 4th gen i would not have a need to come here anymore.
