you have to replace that seal around the striking rod.

I don't really remember what was exactly done to remove to seal, but i remember the entire shifter assembly was taken apart then remove the striking rod where it meets the tranny pull out the old seal but be careful oil will leak unless you drain everything (i didn't) and then just stick the new one in and reassemble everything.

Hmm, trouble shifting, leaking at the striking rod seal - did this rebuilder actually wash the housings at all?

I dont know, When I converted to 5speed, The used tranny I bought had a bent striking rod and a broken seal so I just had the shop overhaul the whole tranny and he replaced all the seals.

Yeah, drive out the two roll pins, the bracket comes off, and then you can pry out the striking rod seal.

Note that the lip on the seal is supposed to hang partway out when it's fully seated - don't hammer at it too much.

Yeah, they're nested.

Leave the ones in the drain plug alone. You couldn't remove them if you tried.

Get the proper sized punch. Sears has a set specifically for roll pins - it works really well. Although I haven't used one from that set to drive out that outer
pin. So you'll want to verify it's the right size first.

With a normal punch, just get one edge of the pin and hammer at it. Use a metal hammer for maximum impact.

That's odd. I've removed around a dozen of those and none were ever stuck beyond needing a tap with a hammer.

That's bizarre. Try using some penetrating oil and striking it with a metal headed hammer for a little more pop.
