3 questions regarding tinted tails (baking, paint thinner...)

Intro: I bought tinted tail lights from a user on this forum, Im pretty sure he did it himself but I dont have any clue as to what he did exactly and cant locate him now.

Question:

1) The tails are tinted but are not red clears. I want to do the red/clear mod but Im afraid of putting the tails in the oven and having the tint melt off. I dont know if this is a legitimate concern but Im not willing to take the chance without expert opinions.

2) My car got hit and there is green paint on the outer tail light. Can I use paint thinner to remove ir, or will this peel the tint? Whats my best option here, goo gone?

3) Im thinking about buying the red clear outter lenses on ebay. They are going for about 70 dollars. Has anyone invested in these before, how is the fit and look? I would have baked my original outer tails but I cracked the passenger side one prying it out.

Thanks in advance

post pics.

1. Everyone is nervous but it will turn out fine, just check on it every 5 minutes.
A heat gun is another option.

2. try to scrape it off, or use a brillow pad, or worse case, wet sand with 2000 grit.

it is easy, just use common sense and don't go start doing something else while the tail lights are in the oven. Tinted tails on maximas look nice

yes a lot of guys have the red clears from ebay. It's fine but some have reported a little issue with fitment. Nothing bad tho. I don't think you're going to get an "expert" opinion on this stuff. Nobody is an expert on it really. Anyone who did the clear mod was at your point in time. Had to decide to put your lights in the oven lol. Its not hard at all, 10-15 at 250 and be careful and patient taking them apart. You can make them just as nice as the $70 ones for $5. Be careful and you'll be happy with the results. Good luck.

I have tinted tails without the red/clear lens. Mine turned out just fine and look quite well on the car. Like everyone has been saying, take your time and everything will turn out just fine.

they look good, but how will it really hold up is the main question. Can it survive the test of weather?

I went to the hobby shop and got tint spray and it came out just as good. My friend with a 5th gen did the same thing and his results looked just like the images posted.

as the seller about how it stands to weather, if there is a kind of warantee, or something.

Dude, from what I recall when I saw your tails, I thought the tint on your tails was sprayed on? Can you confirm that it's a film?

Unless you want to tape out your taillights and surrounding area and still risk getting tint overspray on your car, it is probably best to remove the taillights to spray.

Looks are relative. Some people like the look of it, some people do not.

It may very well be a spray on job, who knows. All I know is that I have green paint on them, and probably scratches underneath the paint as well. I guess Ill try goo gone but I have serious doubts.

Get some rubbing compound, try some clay bar. When do you come back in town? I'll have a looksee.

Wet sanding is not a 'lost art' or anything. Anyone can learn how to do it.

i emailed the ebay seller and he said "it holds up to snow and rain. and it holds up pretty good if u follow my instructions. its very easy to apply especially on maxima" but i also need to know about wind....

are these worth $20 to find out there any good?

I am studying! But all off-topic talk aside, my car was hit in the parking lot two days ago and my driver side outer tail light was smashed into pieces. This is the second time my car was the victim of a hit and run in a month! Anyways, I have to take the tinted tail lights off and put the stockers back on. The damage as of now is a dented in rear fender, a busted out tail light, and a rear bumper that looks like it came out of the UFC.

Here she is in all her glory...

Nilesh, you know anything about tinting tail lights, I have a spare stocker in the garage...

i used to have tinted tails except the reverse lights and tinted front blinkers, i stupidly went to get a sticker at a shop i wasnt familiar with and failed inspection(MA) due to the tint on the lights. i ended up taking the tint off (with gas, a rag, and the rough side of a sponge) and then relized that i knew somebody who could get my a sticker regardless, but I decided to keep them stock. So if u dont know anybody when inspection time comes around, plan on spending some time to take off the tint.
