Serious: New Taillamp Mod...w/ Pic
This is NOT a picture of my car. It's only being used as an example to what I have done. Credit goes to the owner of the picture (sorry, forgot who's site I stole it from)...
Instructions!
I basically painted the entire brake and turn circle red.
Paint used was Testers Transparent Candy Apple Red. You can get it at any hobby store, and possibly at Wal-Mart...
How to do it?
1. Mask off the circle with...MASKING tape (duh) and insuring you are staying as close to the circle as possible. It took me 30mins to mask each lamp. Do this part right and everything will look perfect...MAKE SURE YOU RUB THE EDGES OF THE MASKING TAPE FIRMLY ENOUGH SO THERE IS NO GAPS AROUND THE CIRCLE!!
2. Make sure you cover the rest of the rear portions of the car with newspaper (red paint on the back of your non-red maxima won't look cool).
3. After masking both taillamps, look at the rear of your 5g and laugh, cause it now looks pretty silly.
4. Shake the can of spray paint.
5. Keep shaking, you're not ready.
6. No, KEEP SHAKING...
7. Is the ball moving freely on the bottom of the can?
8. Good, tape the cap off, this is a typical procedure as most (i would say 99%) spray cans don't work well with the cap on...
9. With a firm finger, attack the taillamps leaving a ruler's (that's a foot for you guys who's never seen a ruler) length.
10. Do both sides and wait an hour.
11. Spray again.
12. Look at the back of your maxima and laugh again.
13. After a few hours of drying, removing the masking tape and newspaper, making sure you don't get it stuck to your clothes.
Things I was concerned when doing this:
Q. Will the paint run while on the car?
A. I was in 90 degree heat, at night, in a garage, with the taillamps on my car...It didn't run at all. The paint seems pretty sticky and therefore didn't run. But, it may also be my expertise in spraying.
Q. Will it look ugly?
A. I like it. Better than Altezzas. You eliminate the pokemon ball.
Q. How much did it cost?
A. $5 for the paint.
Q. Does it reduce the illumination of the lamps?
A. Well, of course. But, it's hardly noticable. My turn signals (with the yellow bulbs) still shine through perfectly. My brake lamps with the lights on and on braking shine perfectly through also. There's maybe a 5%-10% illumination loss.
Q. Kam, why are you a crackhead?
A. I'm a Thespian and I got shot in the head last night playing paintball.
Q. Is there a God?
A. ???
Q. Will those Saturn SC owners... I mean, those CL-S owners respect me more?
A. Nope. They have the almighty Type-S... they are invincible.
By the way, the pic attached is of an AE...but, the muffler looks like a GXE?!?!? .shrugs.
