Simple question (I think)

I know what slipping on an auto transmission is/and what it feels like.. But what is it called when the transmission does not want to shift up? I'm starting my journey on a failing tranny. Today I was turning off a main street into my neighborhood and my auto downshifted to 1st ( I had been stopped) and then would not shift out of first until about 4500RPM then it jerked and clanked into 2nd. It normally shifts at like 2K.. I was in drive the whole time and I was driving normally. So what is that called? Thanks guys
Ian

not sure if there is a one word for it, but its shifting hard and shifting late. Sounds like a malfunctioning selenoid.

simple tranny flush has cured many a transmission from hard shifting. (especially hard shifting when cold since old fluid is still thick)

^^^ I agree. A flush could help. If you believe it's starting to slip then that could be another sign it's really slipping. Try a flush and see if it helps. Do you have a flashing o/d light on start up?

Oh boy. Go to AAMCO, have them look at it. Before you go though, find a free external diagnostic coupon online, print it out, and show it to them before they see the car. They will check the tranny fluid, test drive the car, lift it up and check to make sure everything is properly connected - all free with the coupon. They know what they are doing and will tell you exactly whats wrong. After that its $700 for them to rip the tranny out and apart and tell you exactly what needs to be replaced (this is only if they decide that your tranny has some serious issues). My tranny started shifting far too late and being extremely gay (what you described). I managed to bang it off the rev limiter at one point. Then I thought I lost 2nd and 4th, but the aamco guy told me that second "neutrals out". Well, I need a tranny rebuild. Ca-ching! Hope your problem isnt as serious. Go to ammco and good luck!

bad solenoids=new tranny. trust me...been there done that. my tranny slipped for a while until the cel came on indicating bad solenoid pack.

4 mos prior to this happening....nissan flushed my tranny. i had 110k on the tranny. 4 mos later tranny slipped mor than before.
coil pack=$350-$450 iirc

so i bought a used tranny and replaced it. seemed more economical for me-
used 99 tranny with 45k miles=$380
labor=$300

Thanks everyone, well its just getting worse and worse so I may ride it out untill it dies and get a used Tranny, there are quite a few in local junk yards around me and most are cheapish. Since I dont want to put the $$ into a rebuild.. Or I may just pick up this Black 5 Speed Infiniti G20 that I saw for sale..

If you are going to ride it out until it dies, may as well get the flush since it may fix the problem and prevent the need for replacement.

I suggest you start making arrangements to buy that G20 (nice choice, btw). I doubt that your tranny has much life left in it. But GO TO AAMCO lol
