Long Story.. Long Night... Maxima Died...

So I was hanging out with friends as any other teen would do on a Saturday night driving around going to parties when I come around a sharp turn and here a LOUD metal creaking sounds from front drivers side wheel area (had my window down) I didn’t think much of it thought of it as maybe something on the ground when all of a sudden I smell a tremendous about of oil burring. So I look in my rear mirror and see a HUGE cloud of smoke coming out from my back end. I thought "please not a blown head gasket" I pull over to the side and see a HUGE trail of oil from tranny that traces back to the turn. As I look at the tranny its gushing out like someone turned a hose on full blast. So then I waited for 45mins for the tow truck to take me and my maxima back to my driveway. So now I post this on the org for you all to give me advice and help. I am car less and extremely PISSED OFF right not. So if anyone has advice please post...

Now I will go and be pissed off

If you're lucky, one of the transmission cooler hoses broke and sprayed ATF all over the place, esp near where you describe. R&R hose & refill transmission with ATF. That's the best case scenario.

If not, well, it can be all kinds of things....

Sounds like one of your axles slipped out of the tranny,or that crack got really big, really fast..

Oh..edit: leaking around the bell housing?.....Not good..

I wouldn't say it's dead. More like an injury. I'm going to guess something is screwed with the reverse lever assembly which jarred the input shaft and caused the leak. The lever deal is right next to the input shaft and the reverse gear meshes with the input shaft when you throw it in reverse. There's a couple springs and a ball that are part of the reverse assembly and if not set correctly would explain why you're locked out of reverse and also might allow the reverse gear to slide and hit the input shaft gear when it's not supposed to, which could have broke stuff and caused the leak. Again, it's just a guess, this isn't something anyone can positively diagnose over the net, you're going to have to crack open the tranny to find out for sure what's wrong.. Good luck man...

there is a front seal (input shaft), but unless you WAY overfilled the fluid, it shouldn't come pouring out like that.

the mainshaft could have popped through the case into the bellhousing like mtcookson's (???? was that who did it?), but otherwise I dunno.

what type of fluid was it? you never clarified that.

If it's pouring out between the engine and bellhousing, it could be oil or tranny fluid.

based on the smoke, I'm going to guess it poured all over your Y pipe too?

The oil that came out was tranny oil. The dipstick was at its nornal level. The oil was coming out from were the tranny meets with the engine. I have pictures im uploading now. The flywheel has oil all over the teeth (you can see in pics) so im guessing its a large leak. The road I was on has a oil trail for about half mile so it has to be a large crack of some sort. The oil was Pennzoil Synchromesh

The shaft that the throwout bearing slides on broke on mine but it definitely caused a good oil leak. I'm pretty sure it was due to driving on a broken input shaft bearing for way too long (this was around when I first got the Max so I didn't know that was the issue at the time, was constantly told it was the tob... boy were they wrong ).

If that broke would I have still been able to drive it? After I herd the sound when I was driving I drove half mile before I could pull over. The tranny shifted perfectly fine all the way to 5th.. Any idea?

Just throwing it out there: I noticed you don't have the dust cover over the flywheel...Maybe something got in there? Never heard of your specific situation before, so anything is possible...

Yeah, mine would still drive. Only problem was the clutch was a little more difficult to press and it leaked gear oil pretty bad.

in the 2nd pic is your boot rubbing on that bracket next to it? (what is that? a belt tensioner? ugh, 2d pics are totally crappy, that's why humans have 2 eyes to see 3d... makes it so much easier to discern things.)

no the boot is not rubbing in the 2nd pic. The 2nd pic is just show that the oil from trany made it all the way over to the other side of engine. Once I get I get it running again im gonna have to do some SERIOUS cleaning..
