High pitchED whine coming from brAKEs (edited)

I started having the problem about a month ago. I had some damage from a snow related accident and replaced the passenger side control arm and the related parts. This started happening after I had those parts replaced but it sounds like it's coming from the drivers side brake. It'll start after I've been driving on the highway for a little while at speeds excess of 50 mph. If I tap the break, the sound will stop. Any idea's? It's kind of hard to diagnose seeing as it will only happen while I'm driving. Thanks for the help guys.

Have you checked the condition of your brake pads? Just had a similar noise. It was the wear indicator on the driver side pads. Replaced the pads, no noise now!

hmm could it be the little spreader springs that keep the pads milimetres away from the rotor ? if u forgot to re-install them or they got lost and u dont have them, that could be an issue

Take off wheel and look at pad condition. If they're worn down, replace them. Don't forget to replace both sides at the same time.

B R A K E S . . .

And it is probably your pads getting down to the wear indicator.

I haven't had to replace the pads on my max yet so that could very well be the issue. I had to replace them on my old honda and they made a scratchy sound almost, very different from this sound. I'll check out the pads this weekend if I can.

not telling you what to do or anything, but if you wear down your brake pad past the actual pad, your going to do some nasty damage to your rotors. you said about a month you've been hearing the noise. im willing to bet you need new rotors too if its been that long, assuming you drive your car everyday. you should try and get a look before this weekend, another week and you might mess stuff up more.

anyone else agree?

I highly doubt there is any severe problems. It only happens at high speeds on the highway and I don't notice any difference braking when normally driving. I also go to college and take the bus so I only drive my car about twice a week.

you dont drive it alot you should be ok then, you'd notice it faster if you drove it daily. my mom let her jeep go for about a month, comes and tells me the squeal went away and now it grinds, i check it and the rotor and caliper were pretty much dead. and that was only a month.

hmm...noones seems to have noticed that he said when he taps the brake the sound stops....which i would assume means it happens when he is not braking, then brakes and the sound goes away. wouldnt that mean i couldnt be the wear indicator? because that only makes a sound while braking....

On our A33, the noise STOPPED when braking and was there at certain speeds when not braking.
