shifting feels spongy on 5 speed

'sup fellas. I noticed when I shift the stick feels spongy. It doesn't go into gear firm, I have to pull or push with alot of effort.

I ordered a new shift support bracket from nissan. any thoughts to get a more firm shift?

Have you pulled the shifter boot up,checked for anything wrong under there?

It may be a broken rubber shifter bushing...

I fixed the spongy feeling. it turned out to be a loose shift support rod bracket.
Now the stick goes through the gears firm and quick.

Hi,
I think my son's Maxima has the same problem. It seems that when I shift in to 2nd, 4th and reverse it feels soft and way too much travel distance.
Does that sound the same as yours?

Did you fix it your self?

Quadcells, I found that the shift support rod bracket that bolts to the engine was loose. you will have to tighten the bolts. Now I have solid shifting through out all shift points.

There are people out there with a busted rubber bushing in the shifter assembly. Mine has a small crack in it. I tried to get some interest in a urethane bushing being produced awhile back, but didn't have much luck...

Nmax92,
Thanks for the reply. Yea you are correct.
I went under the car and not only was the bolt lose, it is gone.
So I ask my son how long was it doing this. He said a while.

Would you know what size and lenght of that bolt is on a 98 SE?
Or do I need to go to the dealer?

BTW: Thanks again for your help.

Hey welcome and no problem. Sorry, I don't know the size. I had some bolts in my garage that I used. check the dealer for the correct size. When you fix it, you will want to drive your max alot.
