Welding Gland nut?

I'm having a really fun time with the gland packing nut on the passenger side of my 3rd gen. The problem is that the gland nut threads are stripped and the threads on the interior of the strut housing are also stripped.

Can I hammer the gland nut down with the shock in the strut housing and weld it?

Then you would be in a world of hurt need you have to change that strut again. I would find a good used strut assembly at a yard near you and use that instead.

Welding it up would only ask for trouble.

I totally agree and if I wasn't selling the car to a friend of mine who is aware of the problem and the potential fix, I would definately get a new part from a yard. Looks like welding is my only option at this point, but I'm open to suggestions

I guess you could weld it together, but then you are screwed if you ever have to replace the rear struts again in the future, also if your weld ever broke loose while driving in to a corner,it might be a wild ride...

I think i still have a extra gland nut along with a rear strut housing if you are interested...

Wow no! Get an used one. Most here would sell you one cheap. Especially if it's just the housing you need.

get to an exhaust shop...or a shop that works on pipes.

get one side threaded to the thread of the gland nut. get the other side big enough so you can sleeve the pipe over the stock housing.
weld the pipe on to the housing. now you have a new gland nut assembly and you can replace the worn strut when you want to.

To be totally honest with you all I did pick up a strut knuckle from a local yard and the damn gland nut is frozen on there, I couln't get it myself with a vice and pipe wrenches last night so I took the thing to a muffler shop today and they couldn't get it off either. I'm a little desprate because I need my ride back. I'm probably going to weld the sucker and get it back on the road.

use penetrating oil on the nut to soak for a couple hours or overnight, then go to town on it with a big pipe wrench while the strut is clamped into place- either in a vise or shove a piece of tubing through the parallel link joints and use it as a counter-breaker-bar.

on the penatrating oil,i recommend pb plaster..

Here is a pic of the procedure i used for my rear strut housings, the tool used in the pic is a 24" extension through the link bolt housing..

You may have to swap around the position of you/and or the extension to get correct leverage on the gland nut, another person standing on the extension helps out a bunch..

Or you could just buy the gland nut/housing in the picture from me..

I got a ginormous 2 1/2" jaw adjustable wrench from Harbor Frieght for $19 that fit the gland nut. I put the shock in a vise and it cranked that nut right off (after PB blaster spraying it the night before).
