In the thread entitled "Who has experience with A/C compressor clutch", there's a copy of a few pages from the Nissan service manual which references part number KV99232340 (J-38874) which is an A/C clutch puller tool and I was wondering where I might be able to purchase that tool? I'm doubtful the local Nissan dealer would be of any help or would charge 3 times what I could get it elsewhere for. I haven't had any luck on the internet finding it so far. The parts I got on loan from Autozone were no where near the correct fit or design for the 3 holes in the Nissan A/C clutch plate. I even tried to make my own tool out of an aluminum plate with 3 bolts with hacksawed notches in them and a threaded bolt to pull the clutch off but no luck. I think I just need to get the correct tool.

well...a nissan service manual would reference a nissan part number.......soooooo unless you know of a speciality tool that will work, nissan will be the only place you will be getting an a/c puller with that part number.

 

It will be cheaper and easier to pay a shop to pull the clutch than it would be to find the tool. At the very least consider a universal clutch puller tool.

If you're really interested I can look up the OEM for the Nissan SSTs. I can't remember the name off the top of my head. But they're usually very expensive custom-built tools or just reboxed tools that are commonly available. I spent $35 once for a scale to measure the steering rack sliding force - it was a stupid fish weight scale worth $10.

This is a tool with three "hooks" and a big "push" bolt in the middle. I think you can make it yourself as following:

1. Find three pan head screws with heads that will fit thru the holes in the clutch plate.
2. Drill and tap 3 holes in a thick aluminum disc 120 degrees apart in a circle and mount these three pan head screws upside down. There are your "hooks".
3. Drill and tap a hole for the "push' bolt in the center.

I have a home made top cap opener made for Borge struts as well as other home made tools.

Thanks to all for your input. As I mentioned in my post, I rented the Autozone tools but they were no where near the correct fit and design for the Maxima A/c compressor. I had better luck making my own clutch disc holder, and I got the screw off the end of the pulley just fine using that, but pulling the clutch disc off with Autozone's clutch puller tool was a joke - it's the wrong size and doesn't engage the inside of the clutch disc so there's no way to pull it off. I'll try again making my own tool per the suggestions. I think I need a long tapered bolt in the center of the puller which is small enough to fit in the center hole in the compressor. Then when the bolt is tightened, it should push against the center of the compressor shaft without actually engaging the threads of the shaft and release the clutch disc.
