3rd gen runs, shifts, won't move.

Starts up, runs perfectly, I can hear it clunk into gear RND21, all of them. But when I release the brake, the car doesn't move. Sometimes it does lurch forward a few inches, but it stops.

colinod, your transmission has failed, you will need to have it rebuilt/replaced or swap a manual transmission in place of the automatic.
All options are expensive.
You are all assuming the worst with the trans.
it could be something as simple as an F-ed up converter.
or some thing as bad as trashed sun gears.
you don't know, and he won't know until it is PHYSICALLY inspected.
which means pulling it from the car in most cases.
Heck I've had one car that did something similar to me and all it turned out to be was that the converter to flexplate bolts came out!
$4 worth of bolts and we trashed the car out because we ASSumed it was a bad trans.

Sounds like a TC to me too. Thats how I got my maxima for $300. Same symptoms. Starts/runs doesn't move. Swapped to a manual and drove.
I could have just put in a TC from my parts car but I was afraid it would fail later any way, and of any metal that got into the tranny from the TC failing. But the cheapest way to fix it would probably just be a TC away.

Ideas?

that's what my shifter looked like w/o the bushing. $2.53 from my local dealer...
test it by shifting into L, and see if it shifts as though it's in 2. or leave it in 2 like you do, and see if it shifts as thought it's in D.
Well started her up this morning, and now it decides it wants to go forward flawlessly and not reverse. So the tranny shop man came over, put up the car on a jack, wheeled it around and drove it off. No, the car wouldn't go into neutral.. if you'd think that would be a less extreme approch to get the car outta the lot.
You hadn't put a new axle in it had you? I got the wrong axle one time and the car wouldn't move. Got the right one in and all was fine. Visually inspecting the axles there was very little difference.

So this is what is now happening: I shift into D and deeper into 2nd to engage the gear. Then, I shift back in D to go.
Today, I shifted down through the gears and the same is occurring in all the gears. However, when I go back up through the gears the shift just fine.
Sound like the bushing still? Is this something a novice mechanic can do himself?
